RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State
1-2 Savannah State was ranked #338 out of 351 D1 teams preseason by SI. They are 8th in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) in SI, 7th in Blue Ribbon. Squarely in the middle of a weak MEAC Conference. Blue Ribbon analysis: B- backcourt; C- front Court; C bench/depth; B intangibiles.

So far this year they beat 0-3 DII Paine College at home in an exhibition 105-91.
They lost at home in an exhibition to 1-2 DII Fort Valley State 89-103.
And lost on the road to Cincinnati by only 77-107.

This is one of those teams that tries to make up for deficiencies by running a freakish pace: “Tiger Tempo”. Lots of possessions, lots of scoring. KenPom rated them first in the country in tempo last year. They have lots to make up for since they are transitioning back to DII, which must be really depressing for the program. It’s an interesting choice of playing style for Coach Horace Broadnax who learned to play lock down defense under John Thompson Sr. at Georgetown.

Key players:
6-3 190 Sr. G. Austin Dasent,
5-7 175 Jr. G. Tylik Evans
6-6 215 Sr. F. Juwan Grant
6-6 205 Sr. F. Javaris Jenkins
6-5 180 Jr. G Dexter McClanahan
6-7 180 Jr. F Jahlin Smith

Not a lot of length or muscle on the floor.

NKU gave us a baseline. Bucs must take a step forward against low major Savannah State.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State
Bearcats over Savannah St.:

Bearcats cruise, but not completely

Cincy had 20 turnovers like we did - but won by 30.

"Savannah State is known for its freewheeling game. The Tigers last year led the nation with 13.5 made 3-pointers per game, and also had the most attempts with 1,182."

"Savannah State has a quick but not very big team. The Tigers did take the ball hard to the basket, along with their 3-point shooting. Yet, Savannah mostly could not answer UC's superior size and depth."

"Savannah also did not much bother with defense or rebounding. The Tigers put up only token resistance in the lane, with UC holding a 65-32 edge in rebounding. Defensively, the Bearcats had their way inside and were able to zip the ball effortlessly across the top of Savannah's zone defense."

"Savannah State (Ga.) was picked to finish fifth in the preseason MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) poll. The Tigers went 13-16 last year. Savannah State plans to drop to Division II next season."

As I think we've discussed in the past, Savannah St. likely should not have ever moved up to DI.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State
The next 2 teams on our OOC schedule, Savannah State and Delaware State are both MEAC teams and are, by far, the worst D1 teams on the OOC schedule. That's over 140 places worse than the next bad D1 team that we face. That's within 13 places of the worst team in all of D1, Mississippi Valley State at #351. After Savannah and Delaware, the next worse D1 team we face will be middle of the road D1, with a rating comparable to UNCG or Wofford. But these guys are right at the bottom.

That said, they turned Cincinnati over 20 times (as poster noted) and pulled within 7 points of them during the second half (62-69 with 11:33 left) before fading.

Even a bad team can hurt you if you don't take care of business. The Bucs have work to do and need to take advantage of the opportunity.

Three new starters will be in the ETSU lineup against Savannah State.

Freshman center Mladen Armus looked very comfortable in the post in his first college game with seven points and 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 Serbian will take Peter Jurkin’s spot in the first five. In addition, Jalan McCloud and Kanayo Obi-Rapu will replace Devontavius Payne and Jermaine Long.

Still lots of experimentation to take place. Will be interesting to see if my idea/theory of McCloud running point allows Bradford better opportunities.

I like having Mladen as a starter but I'd also like to see Jurkin get more than 8 minutes. Makes sense to have McCloud in there too. Hopefully Payne, Long and Burrell turn things around.

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State
If Peter was just a little quicker on his feet and better with his hands he'd be a force. With that said I too agree with Armus starting over him, he showed a much better ability to guard an athletic center. I like McCloud and Obi-Rapu getting the start too, will help motivate Long and Payne

RE: Official Game Thread: Savannah State
In what will likely be a fast paced game I doubt Jurkin gets much more than "breather" minutes - good thing. Wouldn't be surprised to see a good bit of small lineup with Burrell running at 5 - if he decides to show up in this one. For me though this is a mind game for Bucs and hopefully their heads are right or it could easily be a lot more difficult than it should be. Looking for a team and not individuals.

Not free it seems. Found a paid option through Savannah State's website. $5.95 for 24 hour access.

I have absolutely no problem paying six dollars to watch us play basketball, and I would pay way more if it was a home game that I bought a ticket to. I’m actually very surprised that streaming has gone in the free direction as opposed to making schools more money via subscriptions.

They figured out how to sell ads and found that a lot more people watch when it's free.

Just under 8 minutes to tip. If we can get 20 more ETSU fans in here we’ll have them outnumbered
