Well if they didn’t know before, after this thread they are probably suspecting something.

These are Rice students who are well aware of the team's record this year and in the past, they certainly should have suspicions regardless of this thread.

JK needs to announce and start publicly looking for his replacement. Why wait?
Unfortunately, I’ll believe it when the press conference is held.
If he's ready to replace the coach, he's been feeling out candidates. An announcement doesn't do anything right now. I'll also only believe it when I see it happen. I still believe David Bailiff is coming back to coach out his contract.

There's a 300+ post thread with little more than a couple of mentions that UTSA might be interested and may have asked permission to interview, and a whole lot of wishful thinking. Not a lick of certainty on either side.

The following fictional for entertainment purposes only article has us hiring TCU OC Sonny Cumbie:
"The Owls’ win total fell steadily over the past four seasons, from eight to one, and so did their pass efficiency ranking, starting at No. 21 in 2014 and plummeting to No. 123 in ’17. Believing that fixing the latter will take care of the former, Rice hires TCU offensive coordinator and quarterback whisperer Sonny Cumbie away from TCU."

Sounds good to me. If we can attract a proven P5 coordinator here, more power to us.
And as others have pointed out, the cupboard is not entirely bare. A coach who can come in here and improve execution / TOs may be able to go .500 off the bat

I was gonna say 8-4 at the minimum. C-USA is garbage.
This year, Stanford and maybe UH would be ones I'd write off as losses. Everyone else is beatable. Pitt is horrible this year, Army is decent but not a world beater and the rest of C-USA

You interpret that all wrong but that's okay. Rice isn't going to buy out a contract unless they have to. This team is young and they're all beat up now on defense. And don't forget that Rice loves David Bailiff. I'll be very disappointed if Gary Kubiak gets away, but it's life.

Since when does "Rice" as a whole love Bailiff? Yes, he's an a__kisser, and he's fooled an awful lot of people. Rice will buy out what remains on his contract-- which isn't much at this point-- because they simply cannot afford to do otherwise. Both attendance (meaning revenue) and Owl Club donations took a significant hit when Bailiff was retained last year. If he's retained again after an even worse year in 2017 there will be no season ticketholders or Owl Club donors left...and the Athletic Department is well aware of this.

They aren’t going to have to buy him out. He’s owed that final year of salary regardless, and I’m betting the plan is to put him to work for it. He’ll be an assistant AD or a high school relations guy.

God I hope not. Cut ties and let him ride into the sunset
I dont wish any I'll will on DB but Every day that Bailiff is associated with Rice is one more nail in the coffin of the program. Rice needs to pay his last year or a negotiated settlement and cut ties and let him go. It isn't his fault that Rice was stupid and gave him an unnecessary extension. Rice AD and Leebron need to own that mistake and pay up

Good idea! Fund the buyout from their own salaries/compensation.
