Former UCONN coach wanted his team to be like the George O’Leary coached UCF (GOL was old school, play tough, no penalties type of coach). He decided to create a rivalry game out of nowhere and made a trophy and “countdown” clock.

UConn coach made a trophy but never told the administration at UCF.
UCF had no idea the UConn coach was doing it. UConn just went to the media and started calling it a rivalry with his hobby shop trophy.

At one point UCF was upset that they used our copyrighted logo without consent.

At the time UCF was a year or so removed from being the Conference Champion and winning a BCS bowl and then followed it up by becoming a co-conference champion (back to back conference champions) and was beginning to look like the class of the conference. I believe Diaco was quoted saying something along the lines of if you want to be the best you have to beat the best, and was trying to use the trophy to motivate his team.

It turned into a joke though because 1) he never consulted UCF, 2) that year the wheels fell off, we lost against UCONN and they became the inaugural champions of a rivalry series they made up (they conveniently left off past UCF victories from the engraving) and then GOL was pushed out, 3) as soon as Frost got here (1 year later) we won the game and (this part is fussy) the trophy got orphaned and hasn’t been seen since.
