RE: MBB Game 2 - @JMU 11/13 7:00
Just got back home from the game. Good win for the Monarchs but a tale of two halves. The 1st half was sloppy with to's and whistle happy refs. The second half was all ODU with a bunch of guys contributing. Of course BJ took the game over but I thought Brandon played a great 1st half when it was sorely needed with Porter on the bench. And Pinckney provided a big lift helping to run the team and played solid defense. I was a little concerned about Pinckney but he showed a lot of game tonight without scoring. If he continues to play his points will come because he has a good shooters touch.
JMU is not good this year but a convincing road win is always good in college basketball. At times in the past it seems we have played down to our competition but not tonight. One other item, when BJ gets the defensive rebound he is off to the races, sort of like a point forward. He is not a great passer but he definitely helped get us in some good scoring opportunities with his work on the boards. Caver looked much better tonight as well. Congrats to the whole team on a good win. One last item, I like that stroke of Godwin. He and Hueitt will be a handful in the future when they area playing together.

In past seasons IIRC teams have concentrated on driving to the basket and drawing fous against us. Seems I saw that again last night. To me it's an area of concern. Lots of fouls called on our bigs.

One huge positive from last night's game...we hit 75% of our free throws!!! For ODU, that's freakin' awesome!

Hopefully that trend will continue throughout the year. We've lost way too many close games in recent years with poor FT shooting. Fixing that one fundamental will pay big dividends.

1. Play our game
2. Hit the free ones

I was at the game last night. There was a time that ODU would pack the house. I hope we can get there again in the same conference and JMU does not suck.

Finally got a chance to watch last nights game. Whoever mentioned Madizone being high quality was right. Actually in HD, decent graphics with the score, clock and players names. And replays that are important, relevant and most importantly, not shown during play. Monarch Media could learn a few things.

And of equal importance ... it was free of charge.

RE: MBB Game 2 - @JMU 11/13 7:00
A major reason that ODU won last night can be attributed to their superior play in the low post (Trey & Brandan) over what JMU could put out there. Having size, experience, and skill down in the blocks makes a difference at both ends of the court. This time it was advantage ODU and it showed.

So what did we learn from this game that could be applied to our outlook when the boys go head-to-head against Temple?

Figure out how to defend the post without fouling.

Otherwise not much. They have like 3 guys that see the floor that are as tall as Porter, or close to it (based on the stats someone posted a page or two back).

Agree. Through a couple games it seems obvious that we are going to have a really hard time keeping Brandan and Trey on the court together, and our depth up front will be a real concern when we play better teams. Really, depth across the board is an issue.

Personally, I didn't think we looked like a very good team in either of the games we played (I didn't see the scrimmage). Maybe its just rust or whatever and/or maybe Caver hasn't been at his best, but other than BJ no one really looks any better than last season.

Just keep winning. We haven't looked perfect and are still at 2-0 with a great tournament starting with a game against Temple tomorrow. It just doesn't get any better than that. Hopefully everything starts clicking now and we leave Charleston with at least 2 wins. And while it was ugly, I still think that Towson victory is going to look good at the season's end.

RE: MBB Game 2 - @JMU 11/13 7:00
3 Observations
1. BJ Stith has really come into his own. BJ was a 4-star recruit out of high school, and he is starting to show why. Over his last 20 games, he has been in double figures 16 times. I think he might end up as the leading scorer of this team for the season. What most impresses me, however, is that he hasn't been forcing his way to points. If anything, a case could be made that he ought to be looking for more shots, since Caver hasn't found his rhythm yet.

2. That brings me to my 2nd observation. Ahmad's usage rate thus far has been under 20%. I think he needs to be slightly more aggressive looking for his opportunities to score. In particular, I thought he had 2 or 3 open looks from deep in this game that he would have taken, if he was looking to be as aggressive as he was at various points last year.

3. This might be 05-deadhorse, but Trey Porter has to stay out of foul trouble. ODU is a much better team with him on the floor. While Brandan played better against JMU than in the first game, I think Trey's development might just be the key to the season. Too many of his fouls have come on the offensive side of the court (offensive fouls or over the back). He is an elite defender with enough offensive game to be an anchor for a conference championship caliber team. But, he does the Monarchs no good on the bench.

Two Questions
1. Can Trey Porter stay out of foul trouble? If the Monarchs hope to beat Temple, they are going to have to be able to keep Porter, and Brandan to some extent, on the floor. I actually like the interior matchup for the Monarchs, if the two primary posts can each play 25+ minutes.

2. In keeping with the theme of the other thread, will Randy Haynes be able to shoot the ball consistently enough to become a bonafide offensive option? Randy plays the game with a high level of aggression. He does it on defense, and he aggressively seeks scoring opportunities on offense. However, to this point in his career, he hasn't shot the ball at a high %. He has clearly improved in his game (his efficiency numbers are better on both ends), but in order for the Monarchs to achieve maximum success, he needs to make shots from behind the arc at a 30+% clip.

One Prediction
1. I pretty much nailed the prediction on the JMU game. And because of that, I might quit while I'm ahead and not make such a specific prediction the rest of the season. 04-cheers But, for what it's worth, I predict the Monarchs will get 2 wins in South Carolina. It won't be as pretty as some might like it to be, but I think they'll find some success before heading into a portion of the schedule designed for building confidence before the showdown on Broad Street.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I would say Haynes definitely looks better.

RE: MBB Game 2 - @JMU 11/13 7:00
It seems to me that Caver played two distinctly different styles in the two games. TU overplyed him with very physical traps and double-teams which he tried to aggressively defeat- with some forced drives and quick shots producing a subpar outcome. Against JMU he seemed content to draw the defense out to him, giving others room to exploit the gaps...even his 3s came when Pinckney played PG and he was left open off the ball.

Just could be that ODU changed it's gameplan to exploit opponents's overplay up top and to save Caver the wear and tear during his extended minutes, especially against opponents where ODU can exploit other match-ups, so Caver is ready for the upcoming tourney and the long CUSA season.
