Today the UAB Blazers open their 39th season of basketball. The opening foe is a team that UAB played frequently in the early days, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both teams were Sun Belt Conference foes from 1978 to 1991. UAB holds a 25-8 record against Jacksonville. They have played four times since UAB left the Sun Belt, and Blazers have won all four, surprisingly by small margins of 5, 3, 12 and five in 2011 when they last played.

UAB is 2-1 in basketball games on this date. Two of the games were the coaching debuts at UAB for two coaches.

**On this date in 2006, Mike Davis coached his first game at UAB against Washington State. It was also the first game for Tony Bennett at Washington State. He is now the coach of Virginia. UAB lost 71-60 in the neutral game played in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

**On this date in 2007, UAB traveled to Atlanta to play Georgia State. UAB won 86-63.

**On this date in 2012, Jarod Haase coached his first game at UAB against Division 2 Young Harris. Blazers won 105-59.

** Also born on this date was Tyler Madison in 1994. Madison played for UAB from 2013-2017. He averaged 3.4 points per game in his career. His best year was his sophomore year, averaging 6.4 points per game.
