FWIW, I would say most Midwestern CFB fans would put UWM above ISU in basketball pedigree.

What? I have lived in Iowa, Wisconsin (including in Milwaukee), and Minnesota and haven't run across many (or any) people that would put UW-Milwaukee above Iowa State in basketball pedigree.

even if not in pedigree- last 10 years-
Iowa St- avg KP rating 52- with 1st 2 years being 124 and 113
Milwaukee- avg KP rating 178.5

Milwaukee's best year was 114.

There's time; the conference has largely challenged themselves well, but, yeah...you have to win these games, and you shouldn't be losing to Jax State if you're Richmond.

Maybe Duquesne had the right idea playing a cupcake non-conference...come into the conference season and pound into that part of the schedule and watch your numbers jump. The annual throw-down with Pitt looks like a very winnable game for them.
problem for Duquesne is the conference games won't matter as much.

looking at one of my favorite sites- RPI forecast- it uses Sagarin to project games and then show what RPI would look like.... A10 right now even before yesterday was projected to have 1 team in the top 55.

This is based on how many games? Sagarin is very clear about saying that his ratings are no where near reliable yet, and won't be until conference schedules start to kick in.

while true- it still just shows what's possible.

In KP already- A10 has had 5 unexpected losses already this year. Out of 37 total that we've seen so far this year nationwide. Those are the ones that kills your ratings.

Florida Gulf Coast is looking really good this year.

Beat Illinois State 98-87. Won at Siena by 33.

Dunk City gets the Shockers (my title pick) later on.

Five? So far I count the two Richmond losses and the Bona loss. I wouldn't categorize URI @ Nevada or St. Joe's @ Toledo as especially surprising.

I think the A-10 might have some trouble reaching their usual at-large goal, especially now that EC Matthews is going to miss the next 4-6 weeks for Rhode Island with a fractured wrist. But I think their start is about what most people would have expected, Richmond's hard-left turn into oblivion excepted.

Fordham losing is rarely shocking. And St. Joe's-Toledo was effectively a pick 'em so while I'm sure they thought they'd win, I wouldn't call it an "unexpected" loss.

Even if we accept your number, the larger point is still debatable. I don't think those losses will "kill" the A-10's ratings, especially if Davidson can keep this run of play going. Outside of Richmond, I don't see anyone that appears to be fated to underachieve this season yet, though Rhody's going to have a go of it for the next few weeks.

The problem though is that these are the easier games that the conference has. And tougher ones are coming up. Just like tonight with GW falling to FSU.

Lose to Toledo in football, not hoops. The same Toledo who eeked by Ohio Northern tonight by ten...and only up a point at the half.

Ohio Northern is D3.

Ohio Northern is D3.

And they have a great nickname (Polar Bears).

But St. Joe's was a 1-point favorite—essentially a pick 'em and at another team's gym. If Rhody or Bona loses that game, that's a pretty disappointing result for the A-10. St. Joe's losing is a letdown but it's not exactly a season-defining loss for them or the conference.

Eastern Washington upsets Stanford. Only 3rd loss of the year for the Pac 12- but all 3 upsets.

And the NEC is 1-19. So bottom 3 conferences are 2-61 right now.

Youngstown State 134
Franciscan U. 46

When you beat a team so bad that their game total score is still well short of the victor's first half score...only to get bludgeoned even worse in the second half.

But, oddly, as bad as it looks...only one player scored 20+ points. Only six YSU guys scored double digits. No double-double's.

RE: Laughable College Basketball Scores - 2017/18 Week 1
regarding the A10- part of their problem is look at who they are competing with...
Big East, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, and Big Ten have a total of 18 losses
AAC has 3 losses
MWC has 3 losses
MVC has 2 losses
so those 9 leagues have a total of 26 losses combined.
The A10 has already 9 losses. Only 13 conferences total have more losses than the A10 has right now . Their .640 winning percentage is 12th best right now. That feeds the RPI's as we go along.

The A10 is going to have to really perform big in the exempt tournaments these next 2 weeks.
VCU in Maui- 1st vs Marquette
La Salle in Hall of Fame Tip-Off- 1st vs Northwestern
Dayton in Charleston Classic- 1st vs Hofstra
SLU in 2K Classic- 1st vs Va Tech
RI in NIT- 1st vs Seton Hall
GW in Las Vegas Invitational- 1st vs Xavier
UMass in Barclay's Classic- vs Minnesota and BYU
St Joe's in Wooden Legacy- 1st vs Wash St
St Bonaventure in Emerald Coast Classic- 1st vs Maryland

Davidson in December in Diamond Head Classic- 1st vs New Mexico St

that's 8 1st games vs NCAA tourney teams from last year. In a lot of those tourneys if you lose 1st round you get into losers bracket and the SOS bump drops big time.
