If he ever hires a major sport coach or builds something then he'll have a chance to leave for greener pastures. Until then we're just in a holding pattern.

RE: Frazier Extension
Great news.
I hope that Coach Rod Carey will also be around till 2021.
If we pay our assistant coaches more bonus mo ey for achieving certain benchmark goals
Like $10 000 each time NIU scores 30+ points against a good div1a FB team, we might have a better performance on offence for our FB program.

RE: Frazier Extension
he's still going to leave the 1st opportunity he gets. working at a state school in IL that isnt UofI, has major funding issues, decreasing enrollment, and a conference that alienates its fan base by playing during the week, doesn't strike me as the type of opportunity you stay unless you have no better option at the time.
i like Frazier, and I wish this wasn't the case, but obviously this isn't the best job out there until the state of illinois, NIU, and the MACconference get their act together

It is difficult to judge his performance as he has had very limited resources. I do like The Yard and feel that it enhances the game day experience for families. I dislike weekday night games late in the season at whatever they are calling White Sox Park these days. I hope he works with the MAC and ESPN to work towards more Saturday games for the conference.

I doubt that's an option since the TV contract is already in place

RE: Frazier Extension
I liked his idea regarding a playoff for non-P5 division 1 FB teams.
Creative way for generating more income and strengthen the FB teams resume.
Hope it will eventually take hold.

You are right that this would be at the discretion of ESPN .
That said, contracts can be reworked and renegotiated if they are not working out well. Broadcasting games in front of empty stadiums does not make for compelling television. If things are not working out well for the MAC schools and not working out well for ESPN there is no harm in having discussions about a revised agreement that would be better for both parties.

I agree...but what are ESPN's other weeknight options for programming on ESPNU? ESPN is struggling financially so there's a slight possibility that they'd want to rework or terminate the agreement...but my guess is that their ROI on these MAC games is fine and we're stuck with it

RE: Frazier Extension
He's got a 3 kids and needed to have some stability for them in DeKalb, without the potential of leaving in a year or 2 for not alot more money.
Now if a bigger job comes knocking and he can, in one move, give his family some nice financial stability, he's out of here, like anyone else would be.
At NIU, his hands are tied by low $s. He can try an be a national figure as a champion of the G5 schools, but that's not a role he really wants to take, I'm sure he'd rather an AD in the Big 10.
Will he now extend Rod? that is the question!

That's neither necessary nor financially smart at this time.

If there is no raise involved, then yes, absolutely. And if there is a minimal raise, then yes, absolutely.

Agree.
Rod Carey is over 65%.
We had a HC with a lower percentage of wins goto Indiana, Oregon State and Minnesota. It is only a matter of time before Rod Carey gets picked off. Atleast when that happens NIU can get a $1million payout. Hopefully this time the payout would be used for FB and not some other sport or sports.

Let Carey win some meaningful games before he gets a raise. I wouldn't be surprised if Carey's record against winning teams was below 30%. He still needs to show he can beat GOOD teams. His overall record is padded with wins over bad teams.
