Among other topics he suggests that Division I be reduced to 120 teams and could pass around more money among those 120. Do you think ODU would make the cut? I think it would be close but yes I would argue that we are one the top 120 basketball programs in the country.

There are 102 teams just in the P5, Big East, A10, and AAC.

No, we would not make the cut because we are a 14 team conference, they only need 18, and that is definitely include the West Coast for Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and BYU, leaving 8. My guess is the 10 team conferences would expand to get to the 120 and we wouldn't be a candidate for any of them (West Coast, Big 12, Big East). The Big 12 is a P5 conference in the central US and the other 2 don't have football. Bilas's plan would be a disaster for us. They aren't going to simply pick 120 teams because all these teams are under contract with conferences so they have to include teams like Fordham, Duquesne, Pepperdine, ECU, Tulane, etc.

The plan is irrelevant. It's nothing more than stupid bar talk.

Bilas has the dumbest ideas ever. For someone who's seemingly pretty smart, the crap that comes out of his mouth is mind boggling.

It's a dumb discussion but if this did happened football would be the deciding factor. If you arent playing FBS football, you aren't making the cut. Have the best of CUSA and Sun Belt merge, drop the dead weight and 120 seems like an easy nunber to get to.

Well, first off, it'd never happen. 120 teams means less easy wins in the regular season, and the last thing the lower third of that 120 is going to want is a markedly worse record every year. Plus, if you're going to invite lower schools to the NCAA tournament anyway, as he suggests, then what's the point?

But playing the game by its improbable rules, you figure that the Power 5, Big East, AAC and Atlantic 10 would all be involved, so that's 99 schools right off the bat. Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU bring you to 102. So that's 18 spots, give or take, and they'd either have to be slammed into awkward conferences or they'd have to be independent.

Given facilities and history, ODU might make it, but yeah, it'd be a close call.

What makes you think half of the teams in the A10 would automatically get in? and the AAC for that matter. If we never started football we would 100% be in the A10 so your argument is invalid.

RE: Jay Bilas on College Basketball
I'm sure what he means is the P5 conferences, and maybe a couple more, not the real top 120 teams. That would change every year anyway. Assuming the P5 are all in plus the Big East, that would leave about 4 or 5 more "mid" conferences... and right now CUSA might not make the cut. The top 10 conferences probably do. So assuming the AAC and A10 get the nod, that leaves the West Coast, MWC, MVC, MAC, CAA, CUSA and Sun Belt all vying for the final two spots. My guess would be they take the MWC and MVC.

At that point they may very well decide to invite the MWC and AAC to be a part of the college football playoff and relegate the rest of us to has been status for both football and basketball.

OR, maybe we get lucky and they take all 10 full D1 conferences, plus the BE, A10, WCC and MVC.

The issue with that is there are plenty of non-football schools that have strong basketball programs. The Big East and the A10 would be left out, along with others. Wichita State, while now in the AAC, would be left out. Not to mention, FCS schools that also have strong basketball teams would be left out of it too. As much as I would think we would make the cut if this ever really did happen, I don't think we would. But this is a hypothetical so it doesn't really matter.

How is the argument not valid? If we were in the A10, we'd get in... but we aren't. Half the A10 would automatically get in because they are in the conference and bound by contract. The only way we'd get in is if we got an invite to the AAC or went independent in football and got into the A10 or Big East. There is no way CUSA would make this cut.

Also I feel like this is an attempt to ask for the P5 to break away from the mid-majors. Bilas is a Duke basketball alum and a talking head for ESPN, it would make sense that he would say something like this

If you were going to make a cut, it would not be based on current conference affiliation.

What do you think, all the non-P5 schools will go independent (assuming all the P5 schools get in regardless)? How else would we get out of our CUSA contract that says we have to play all sports that they sponsor in the conference?

Obviously some programs and conferences are a given, I dont think that being in the A10 (teams like Fordham, St. Bon. and Duquense are far below ODU) is an automatic invite and being in C-USA is being an automatic out. All of P5 and maybe big east but after that its a toss up to who gets in.
