They are looking to enhance production studios in the wake of leaving Netflix. Still as you noted spinning off the News, Business, and Sports would advantage all of their other holdings depending upon the buyers. But it looks to me like those entities would remain as a group and under the current owners. The excerpt did note that it might help them focus funding that would help them compete. Still, the studios have been a money maker by cooperating with Disney for the Star Wars movies etc.
If it goes through it will be interesting to see how it affects the other aspects of FOX that aren't being purchased.

This could be a big shot of cash for FOX. Could be good for college sports.
Disney has a pretty extensive production facilities. I think they are more interested in the library and franchises.

Move #2 after this one - AT&T buying the rest of the FOX networks and sports group which would create the perfect mix with them buying Time Warner.

Better buy both stocks then?

Fox has the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four spheres of the Marvel Universe. Sony has Spider-Man.

Apparently also passing on Fox OTA network and the local stations for anti-trust reasons.
It's the studios future output and libraries they really want. If they pull off the deal, their direct to consumer streaming service could be a real blockbuster. The entire Marvel line-up but for Spiderman, Star Wars (wonder if we see a Star Wars universe series as bait to gain subscribers), a huge amount of sports inventory.

All because they want to make the Star Wars movies look the same at the beginning. Geez.
This makes sense if they're looking to dump ABC.

RE: Disney buying 21st Century Fox??
Given Disney's dominance in a putrid box climate office this year, this will allow them to explore new villains like Doom and Kang in Avengers 4,5, and 6 plus old staple characters like Fantastic Four and a rebooted X-Men in the current cinematic universe. So you are looking at another 6-8 years of Marvel tentpole films.
FS1 and Fox Sports/Business stays put.
Onto ESPN and ABC. Well, you need a streaming platform for live sports that is subscriber based. You can get the big events on your phone by logging in on your cable account, but maybe they want to also stream some second and third tier content in sports and TV and charge a la carte?
You also need your adult oriented FX channel. You can have also do low budget Star Wars TV shows and less expensive Marvel character on in-house streaming services, and away from Netflix.

Denied after it went public. Executives testing the market. Disney stock spiked and rose throughout the day.

RE: Disney buying 21st Century Fox??
look for Netflix to move in on this
Netflix is worth $86 billion currently while all of Fox is worth $60 billion after the stock jump
this gives Netflix anything from all of Fox, Studios and movie content and a full network and sports to just sports and the channels without the studios and movie content
the Sports gives them something different and "live must see now" to attract subs and the TV networks actually gives them an outlet for "reruns" to get viewers for their original programming that will just not sign up for a streaming service, but will watch a show that was "popular" and 3 seasons old or more
with full on studios and associated past content that gives them more powerful in house production AND a back catalog to build on for the future possibly cutting out movie theaters for some new movies
either way there is value and opportunity in all or part of Fox for Netflix

Very interesting take. We'll need to hear soon if Netflix wants in on the action.

RE: Disney buying 21st Century Fox??
Disney is most likely looking at content for its new subscription service to put in a better position to compete with Netflix and HBO. Not only do you get Fox's recent release movies (currently shown in the pay window on HBO), you get a huge library of films and TV shows, including the original Star Wars. As folks have pointed out, it gets them the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Also, don't discount the value of all of the series produced or owned by FX, many of which are very good (54 Emmy nominations this past year compared to ABC's 34). FX also owns the entire library of Simpsons episodes. The combination of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, ABC, ESPN films (30 for 30, etc.), Disney Channel, Freeform, Fox studios, Fox television production, and FX would provide a huge library of existing material together with production capability for a virtually unlimited number of new shows and movies.
As ESPN has entered a stage with limited growth, Disney needs a replacement growth vehicle. Creating a viable competitor to Netflix and HBO is an excellent strategic play to try to accomplish this. As someone pointed out, Netflix has a market cap of $86 billion. Disney, with ESPN and all of its other assets, has a market cap of less than twice this amount at $155 billion. The Fox assets being discussed would strongly bolster Disney's efforts to implement this strategy.

The title is misleading. Fox will keep Fox, Fox Sports, Fox News and Fox Financial. Basically ABC will only buy minor properties of Fox, specifically movies and minor cable channels. Also Fox and ABC has no longer talk on the issue. CNBC is just stirring the pot on yesterday's news.
The most misleading part when CNBC reported this yesterday is to question Hulu's ownership. Right now NBC, ABC and Fox each own 30% of Hulu. (CBS has its own streaming service.) CNBC speculated that ABC ownership would go up from 30% to 60% if ABC acquired part of Fox. They treated viewers like idiots. If Fox keeps Fox broadcasting network, they still own 30% of Hulu.

Disney buying 21st Century Fox??
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.co...urces.html
"Disney would not purchase all of Fox, according to people with knowledge of the talks.
The company could not own two broadcast networks and would therefore not buy the Fox broadcast network. It would not buy Fox's sports programming assets in the belief that combining them with ESPN could be seen as anti-competitive from an antitrust standpoint and it would not buy the Fox News or Business channel. Disney would also not purchase Fox's local broadcasting affiliates, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
In addition to the movie studio, TV production and international assets such as Star and Sky, Disney would also add entertainment networks such as FX and National Geographic."
