Willie Taggart is going to be Option A. Justin Fuente will be on the short list after that. I am a little scared VT could come sniffing around Houston if they lose Fuente.
Their AD is a JMU grad - hopefully he'll leave us alone.
oh.. wait.. he already took our basketball coach.

Maybe they’ll finally grow the balls needed to schedule us?

Houston to VT - no way. It would mirror London to UVA. Too much of a similar story and everyone knows what happened to UVA... Not going to happen, this year. IMHO

Some of you are seemingly dying for Houston to be poached by a P5. VT isnt going to come calling. A G5 will be his next move. The only ACC school that would probably take a flyer on an FCS coach here would be Wake Forest if Clawson moved to a VT or somewhere similar.

wouldn't it just be SO rich if it happened though. Would we lose our minds that we lost another employee to VT or would they lose it more that they hired an FCS coach?

I'm thinking that if Fuente gets picked off by FSU, they might go back to the well and hire Norvell. (Personally I think they're looking for a P5 assistant or G5 HC.) That would open up the Memphis job for Houston, but I'm not sure he's first on their list.
Like I said previously, I'm more convinced he'll stay at JMU until the G5 position he wants opens up.

One big difference. Houston can coach. London can't.

Houston to VT would be the worst, mostly because I hate them. But also living in Virginia would mean I would have to constantly see him on TV wearing Tech gear.

I don’t care what Whithers ever does again even though he got us back on track. I’ll definitely follow Houston’s career should he leave JMU one day.

Just as long as Coach doesn't go to Tech. Still haven't forgiven them for poaching our first President, Julian Burress.

We might be FCS but we could beat 70% Of FBS programs.

Come on now, that's a bit overconfident. Maybe 70% of the G5 teams, but not when grouped together with the P5 that make up FBS.

It's bad enough to have to see Kenny Brooks doing that...but at least he sends recruits our way on occasion.

nc state? maybe there was a chance.
but far better candidates than Houston will apply for the Tech job. And be offered it before him.
Who are we kidding... Vince Lombardi died back in 1970.
There's not a living coach better than our own Michael Glenn Houston.

RE: Vol Nation Thread- Mike Houston to Tennessee?
Don't worry, Fuente isn't goin' anywhere.
Quote:But, perhaps more reassuring to Hokies fans, head coach Justin Fuente publicly stated that he’s not interested in other jobs at the moment, despite his name popping up on the coaching carousel in the past few weeks.
“For me, it’s been easy. I’ve declined to talk to everybody that’s come along,” Fuente said during a Sunday evening bowl teleconference, when asked how he manages those rumors. “So it’s a pretty easy answer for me. I haven’t been interested in going down that road.”
Fuente has been mentioned as a candidate at Florida State, though that appears to have been more driven from the FSU side. Early reports out of Tallahassee were that the Seminoles identified Oregon’s Willie Taggart and Fuente as two coaches they were interested in. That never gained momentum, however.
“I think everybody knows I’m incredibly happy at Virginia Tech,” Fuente said. “I think I’ve proved it in my short time here. I would never speculate on any other jobs, other than to say we’ve been approached and I’ve declined to talk to anybody. So it’s pretty much been nipped in the bud right from the start.”

FWIW, even if Fuente left I don't think that Babcock would pursue Houston, and it's not even because of the optics of hiring an FCS coach. When Fuente was hired, Babcock made sure to stress that a big component of his criteria was that he was looking for an offensive-minded head coach and had some statistics to back up his reasoning (something like former OCs who had become head coaches had a better winning percentage than former DCs in the last decade... can't find the article wher he was quoted, but that was the jist).
Given Houston's background and the DNA this year's team is undertaking, I would venture a guess that Houston might consider himself a defensive guy.

Well, when you have Bud Foster willing to stay on (apparently until he retires), it makes the decision to hire an "offensive-minded" guy even easier. I think a condition of employment for any new HC in Blacksburg starts with "are you willing to accept Bud Foster as your DC?"...if no, then forget 'em.
