FWIW, Mercer (108th SI) edged Troy (155th and 6th in the Sun Belt) in an exhibition at Mercer, 77-73. 6-5 Rs-So G Ethan Stair playing the 6th man continues to give Mercer an offensive boost, with 13 pts on 6-7 and 1-2 from 3 in 26 minutes off the bench... also 3 rebounds, 0 assists, 2 t.o.'s and 2 steals. He’s taking minutes from Rashad Lewis and Demetre Rivers at guard.

Compare to ETSU’s (110th) 18 point scrimmage win over Asheville (132nd ) in Asheville.

Not to hijack your thread but sticking with the exhibition subject, Chattanooga lost to Francis Marion at home yesterday in an exhibition.

Ouch - going to be a VERY long year for the Mocs. Might as well throw others in here too:

140th SI Wofford got whipped by 204th SI Gardner Webb at Boiling Springs 82-70, giving significant minutes to freshman forward Keve Aluma and freshman guard Tray Hollowell.

In a series of brief exhibitions, UNC-Greensboro beat UNC-Chapel Hill 32-24 in a 13 minutes skirmish at their place!! They then tied East Carolina 15-15, and lost to UNC-Wilmington 19-16 in similar 13 to 14 minute battles.

Western Kentucky (100th SI) beat Samford (118th SI) 78-64 at Samford.

BUT - Samford played without all-SoCon starting center Wyatt Walker, and without Alabama transfer Justin Coleman. Why?

Samford 95 - Spring Hill College??? 60

It appears that Justin Coleman the 4 star former starting point guard for Alabama, and the most highly touted newcomer in the SoCon did NOT play either game.
Also no Wyatt Walker.

WHY??? Coleman is still on the roster, though, as is Walker.

Furman had a couple of closed scrimmages. Although there isn't an official score released, word is that the Paladins beat Radford by between 30-40 points and beat Gardner Webb in a much closer game. Freshman Noah Gurley supposedly had a strong game against GW. A lot people have figured that Gurley might redshirt to gain weight and muscle but maybe he will get some playing time this year. He has apparently been practicing with the wings instead of the posts in the individual drills. Bulk isn't so important on the perimeter.

Wofford had bad games from both Magee and Jackson against Gardner Webb. Magee only hit 3-13 shots and Jackson went 0-10 from the free throw line. The Terriers are going to struggle when that happens. I am not counting on it happening in many SoCon games.

UNCG appears to have saved their starters for the second game, against North Carolina, while UNC was playing with mostly bench guys after using their starters in the first game. Alonso had 14 points and hit 5-5 shots including 4 threes while playing 11 of the 13 minutes against UNC.

In general it is misleading to put too much meaning into these pre-season games and scrimmages. So far we have seen Auburn lose to a D2 school and Marquette and Wake Forest squeak by with 2 point wins against other D2 schools. Coaches have different agendas for these games.

I put way more stock into open, public scrimmages than I do the closed ones. When you lose an open scrimmage to a D2 school, no one can deny you've got problems.
