AAC North/South divisions in 2020 with Army and 1 more
I’ve been against Army joining the AAC because of the CUSA disaster in the early 2000’s. I don’t want to see Army get hurt or become uncompetitive again. But if the AAC did a true North South alignment I’d be in favor of it. As long as Army doesn’t get stuck playing USF, UCF, Memphis, Houston & SMU, I think Army could have great winning seasons like this one.
AAC 2020:
AAC North: Army, Navy, Uconn, Temple, Cincinnati, ECU and 1 of UMASS, ODU, JMU
AAC South: UCF, USF, Memphis, Tulsa, Tulane, SMU, Houston
8 Conference games, 6 in the division, 2 crossover games. Leaves 4 OOC like now.
I think these would get Fox, NBC, CBS, ESPN bidding on a very nice media deal for the AAC. I also think it would save money on travel. This would look great on a map. A true North South conference unlike the ACC which does the zipper thing.
Thoughts?

Navy wants SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa on the schedule. That's why they are in the West.

Navy wants to be in the South/West. Also, a division with both Texas and Florida schools would never fly.

...and why not? All recruiting is national in the year 2017.
The biggest issue I see here is that you have five of the strongest six programs in one division.

I realize both of those things. I guess I’ve designed a conference based on Army fitting into it. It probably wouldn’t work, but it’s an idea. I’m also happy with the current AAC configuration and with how well Army is doing as an Independent right now. Just floating this out there...

What a self serving post. Trying to make to make ECU relevant again by putting all the strength in the south.

We're not all blessed to be located in the bayou, where football is king. Probably also why you wouldn't be pleased with a North/South split in basketball.

Right - Navy specifically requested that they be in the West because of the schools there.

That and grouping East Carolina with more ' 'prestigious' schools. Thinks it might rub off

East/West is better.
EAST
Army/VCU
Cincinnati
Connecticut
East Carolina
Temple
South Florida
UCF
WEST
BYU
Houston
Memphis
Navy/Wichita State
SMU
Tulane
Tulsa

East/West is just an easier split, especially when you factor in Time Zones. It would really depend on who is #13/14. I don't see us taking UMass/ODU/JMU just to get Army unless the AAC would gain full control of the Army-Navy game.

RE: AAC North/South divisions in 2020 with Army and 1 more
While I agree that north-south would reduce travel costs, a zipper division would be fun. This is just a quick rearrange (so some of these schools could be flipped above or below to even out a division if one looks like it could be balanced better). For lack of a better idea, I thought that the academies in each division could inspire the names (since we are The American)
AAC 2020:
AAC Land : Army, Houston, USF, UConn, Temple, Memphis, Tulsa
AAC Sea: Navy, SMU, UCF, Cincinnati, UMass, ECU, Tulane
In basketball, there would be no divisions and we could possibly add in VCU and Dayton for basketball and the other Olympic sports. Army and Navy would obviously be football members only just as Navy is currently.

If BYU is your West addition you will need an all sports team because dont think they will join for ALL sports. I would rather try to get SDSU and fanhhod on board .

Army/VCU
UConn
Temple
ECU
USF

I would keep Army- Navy game as a nonconference match up

BYU wont join a non-power conference since their ego wouldn't be able to handle it. I would go after CSU. Fits better in the footprint and they just built a nice brand new FB stadium. Opens them up to recruiting in Texas and Oklahoma which could help them.

I think BYU's ego has taken a blow this year. Especially if we wind up making decent money on our next contract, while they continue to suck.

I say we...
1. Leave the conference as it is now, and...
2. Rise to world domination! AAC! AAC!

Too bad this realignment scenario is for 2020. If it were for 2023-24, then we forgot to slot Rutgers in there.

East-West with Army, Navy, and Air Force in the WEST. Move the Army-Navy game to Veterans Day or Thanksgiving Day.
EAST: UConn, Temple, Cincinnati, ECU, UCF, USF, Memphis
WEST: Army, Navy, Air Force, SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Tulane
Give Army the concession of more cross-division games against UConn and Temple than the others.
Add VCU for Olympic sports and favor regional matchups for H-H pairings.

Why not Toledo, as opposed to UMass/ODU/JMU...
The Rockets have fared well against ex MAC mates UCF and Temple over the years, not to mention, Navy, and Cincy...
