Norvell holds team meeting to address job rumors
This is why I like Coach Norvell. No BS and a straight shooter. Didn't see this posted...sorry if #Pope

When the University of Florida announced Sunday it had parted ways with football coach Jim McElwain, Memphis coach Mike Norvell quickly emerged as a potential candidate in various national media reports.

Whether that’s actually the case remains to be seen in the coming weeks and months, but Norvell felt compelled to discuss the rumors and the team's rise in notoriety with his current players.

RE: Norvell holds team meeting to address job rumors
Not sure what he told the team, but it's a good thing that one of the players says he's a great person and he's being honest. That's all you can really do in a situation like this.

If it were me, I'd tell the team this:

I love this team, and I've enjoyed every minute of our journey together. There's still more to come. Let's be 1-0 this week. As far as rumors and speculation about other job opportunities, it's a testament to what YOU have accomplished on the field and all the hard work you've put in off the field. When you're successful, you attract attention. We have to stay focused. Think of the distractions as the opponent. Don't let them get you off your game.

As far the future, none of us no where we'll be in 3,4,5 years from now. Life is constantly changing. I can't tell you for certain I'll be here in a few years from now. No coach can honestly say that. If an opportunity ever arises that I decide to seriously consider, I'll be honest with you about it. For now, let's go play football.

Not saying this is the situation with Norvell but it Would take a magician to get the same effort out of all the players who have committed to you yet you are proving yourself not to be committed to them...

I totally agree. Regardless of what he tells the team, if they know he's fielding offers, it's hard to believe some of them wont' check out.

Read that in the paper the other day.

Sounds like he told them he would listen to offers and expect his name around, but we need to focus on next game, next play.

Realistic. The only thing that means a coach is not listening is if they say....

I WILL NOT take that other job and I WILL be here next year.

EVERYTHING else is hedging coach speech. I want to be here. I love it here. Why would I leave. We have a game. I respect the opponent. We are thinking about Saturday. Memphis is where ai want to be. We have great relationships in Memphis. We can win here. We are winning here. Name your quote.

Only absolute YES or NO mean anything. He will listen. He should listen, and if an offer is good enough at a school higher up the chain and he believes he is capable so that he would not sabotage his long term future for a short term contract, he should go.
