1) Maintaining the edge on defense. Time after time I saw the DE go into the backfield or leave his assignment, thus losing containment and allowing easy yardage.
2) #17 - Look, I've been hard on him in the past, but he has NOT gotten better. Every time I noticed a missed tackle or that a man was out of position it was the same jersey. Are we sure that there isn't a better option?

One thing that became apparent as time was winding down, NIU did not have the sort of offense to play catch-up. Had Logan not fumbled that ball at the goal line the game would have been put away a lot sooner.

Better execution, get rid of the mistakes. I believe Rockets have something like 3 LB'ers out for the season. The blocked punt and goal line fumble not happening would have made it 34-14.

What is making Logan Woodside think he is a runner? That needs to be a last resort. He seems to be running ALOT more this year

Up to that point, a lot of the snaps were low and that threw the timing off on the plays. Same as the Ball State game when the snaps in the shotgun were low - then high. Jeppeson put them all right at the waistline of Woodside. So much of a difference that Jeppeson should be getting the game ball..

Very good point!!

They mentioned that on the pre-game. I shudder every time he takes off.

It can keep drives but it appears as if he's getting too used to it, using it as an option instead of a last resort and over-looking open receivers.

Should dial it down a bit.

It wasn't a run but that hit on him by Sutton Smith near end of first quarter was harder than I ever recall Woodside being hit.

I think it's just another wrinkle they put in the offense. It has had success, especially when defenses are jamming up the RB's. They generally do not expect Logan to run. That fumble was unfortunate, but look how many spectacular scores by receivers and returners have been called back due to penalties. Screw ups happen.

They mentioned on the radio that he seemed unusually low key during the post-game interview. I noticed that he looked pretty stoic making the "high 5" trot along the sideline right after the game. Maybe he felt like he didn't have a very good game. (Could be something else, of course.) Or, maybe he feels like he needs to learn to scramble and slide a little in prep for the next level. I always cringe when he takes off, too, though.

Logan is probably his harshest critic.

or maybe he's getting banged up. He was hurt, that he couldn't hide. Against NIU I get it. There's no reason to be running against CMU up 3-4 scores. If he's his harshest critic then he should know he's got to be thinking long term and not take those risks, for the team's sake.

The kid is an athlete and a leader. Can't fault him for trying to make play. I wouldn't slide at the goal line either. Otherwise, middle of the field he has to be smart. Get the first down and slide.

I agree with this assessment. He is more likely to take a pounding and get hurt from a blindside hit or getting hit low and blowing out a knee or ankle if he stays in the pocket too long waiting for someone to come open. He is doing a much better job of taking off at the right time, getting yards and getting on the ground before he takes a hit.

RE: Thoughts Post-NIU
I didn't realize what a great player Woodside was until this game. He had some wide open receivers, but he also put some beautiful touch on some of the passes where we actually had decent coverage. You have a very good team, but he is definitely the difference this year. I really like your fast receiver that was killing us too. I thought we did a good job on Swanson until the 3rd qtr. He made some moves on a couple runs in the 3rd qtr drive that gave Toledo the lead back that were amazing. Your O-line and Swanson wore us out in the 2nd half. We needed to have a couple more sustained drives to give our D some rest, but your D put up a few 3 and outs in a row. Hope you win out and represent the MAC in a big bowl.

Yeah, runs don't seem designed and he picks his spots well. Still scares me.
