So 4 years with both, 4 years without both.

(3 games every year)
JMU
Elon
RU
W&M

(3 games every year)
Delaware
Towson
Villanova
URI

(2 games every year)
Maine
New Hampshire
Stony Brook
Albany

I don't know how they group the schools, but we've had W&M, RU, Elon, and Villanova on our schedule five years in a row (including 2018). I'm not going to verify if each of them has had the others over the same period, but I figured if they haven't rotated off our schedule by now, we're linked to them somehow.

I hope you're right. If they did something like this it would depend when they started it because any given team from that cluster would be on our schedule for 6 years straight, then 2 off. I guess the only way this might prove out is if we see Delaware off our schedule for the next 2 years, and then see them back on with Nova off the 2 years following that.

Instead they need to break it into 2 clusters and have us play Group A every year and half of Group B in rotating home/home. That's 8 conf games and we should get 2 of W&M, Delaware, RU and Nova at home every year.

Group A
James Madison
Delaware
Elon
Richmond
Villanova
William & Mary

Group B
Albany
Maine
New Hampshire
Rhode Island
Stony Brook
Towson

With 12 teams CAA should go back to what it did 2004-2009 I think it was- with 12 teams had 6 team northern and 6 team southern divisions. Same as what you have listed except VU would be in the northern division and TU would be southern. It worked well for everyone- play the other 5 teams in your division, and 3 of the 6 in the other division for 2 years on a home and home, then switch to the other 3. If that was the case JMU would play the other 5 most southern teams (Elon, W&M, RU, TU, and UD every season).

Exactly what they should do. They’ll need a scheduling agreement between UD and VU though. They won’t let that be split up with off years. Maybe UD and VU let Elon be their “northern/other” group occasional off year team, for example.

Yep. But no 6th home game = major fail by Bourne. If only 5 home games instead of 6, then season ticket prices and Duke Club giving levels should be cut by 1/6th. Charging full price and only delivering 5/6th of a product is a crock.

Why do you think they have the occasional 5 game home schedule? They charge the same price in 2018 as they did in 2017, then in 2019 when they have 6 home games they charge more and say, "they had to because they can't charge us the same price for one additional game." It gives them a reason to raise ticket prices every so often. I'm not saying I'm really opposed to it, I'd get season tickets regardless, I root damn it! But, I think that is some of the thinking behind the 5 home game schedules from time-to-time.

This schedule is awful and embarrassing. One hell of a way to reward a fan base that would go to the ends of the earth to support our team. There is simply no way to put lipstick on this pig I'm sorry.

That is a tough schedule to defend even if you are a Kool-Aid drinkin', administration apologizin' JMU employee. In all fairness to my homeboy, Jeff Bourne, how can he come up with a decent fcs schedule; NDSU followed by Montana, followed by YSU? Are Montana and YSU even good anymore?

It may at least give some of us this as ammunition; "see, see, we belong in fcs because the attendance is dropping"

There's not much us armchair Athletic Directors can argue about. 8 of the games are what they are. Thanks a lot Joey and friends.

That leaves 3 to discuss I guess.
-One's gonna be an FBS game. I think we did pretty good here.
-We knew it was going to be a payback game @ NSU. We have already beat that horse to death. I guess the pro NSU argument is that it's good to play VA schools? The VA schools us fans want to play aren't going to play us.
-Robert Morris? Is the NEC the only conference answering the phone when we ask people to come play us? I hope we're "dreaming bigger" but it doesn't seem like we can get bigger rivals to come to Harrisonburg.

Luckily if you live in or around Virginia, you have the opportunity to visit NC ST, Norfolk ST, Richmond, and Towson. Road games can be just as fun 04-cheers

I actually think the 1 FBS + 2 patsie FCS games may come from the way the playoff selection process and the NCAA SRS work. NDSU and other schools do this too.

NCAA SRS gives more credit for an FBS win, so a win will improve your score more and a loss hurts you less than an FCS loss. A winnable FBS game is ideal for the SRS ranking, plus you get paid.

NCAA SRS treats all wins/losses equivalently, except for the SOS component/score,which looks at your opponents W/L too. Margin of Victory also factors in. So ideally, you would select teams from weak conferences that are likely to win a lot in that conference. We should get SHSU or Central Ark on our schedule immediately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think NDSU's new policy is to play FBS every other year to preserve having 6 home games. So something like:

Year 1:
FBS away
FCS home(return game)
FCS home(no return)

Year 2:
FCS home(no return)
FCS away(return game)
FCS home(no return)

EDIT: After looking at NDSU website, I don't think they're even scheduling FBS until Oregon at 2020 unless some buying out happens.

-NC State is a good get. A game against an ACC team within a decent drive for a lot of JMU's fanbase is very nice.
-I agree with this, too. We want to recruit there, it's good for JMU fans in the 757 to come see the team.
-This is the only one of the non-con foes I wonder about, as well. It seems like there are a fair amount of Southern, Pioneer, and Ohio Valley schools that ought to be reasonable travel distances and therefore gets for home-and-home series. Unless those teams just don't want to come to the 'burg.

As for the conference schedule, Elon and SBU are good this year; they may not be next year, or they may both be building something. They won't be as exciting for our local fans, but there's no reason to think the games won't be competitive conference games.

We can want to schedule tougher teams all day, but we can’t make them sign on the dotted line and do it. Opening your season on the road in Harrisonburg is a tough sell these days I imagine.

Money talks. There are plenty of more competitive teams in FCS that will take a Guarantee game in Harrisonburg. What is the going rate now? $80,000? 100,000?

Listen to this podcast. It's Kevin White who handles our scheduling. He's pretty frank in it.

If you're still crying after that. I don't know what else to tell you. I guess you're just going to always be crying.

When you're a good program, teams are hesitant to play you because they know they're scheduling a loss.
