UNCW grad Brandon Beane already doing great things as GM of Buffalo Bills
Today, the 5-2 Bills traded a 3rd and 7th round pick for Carolina WR Kelvin Benjamin. It's one of many savvy moves the 1st-year GM and former Seahawk has made in his new gig since being announced to the position on May 9th.

Recall that back on August 11th, the Bills traded Sammy Watkins and a 6th round pick to the Rams for a 2nd rounder and CB E.J. Gaines. While Watkins has done next to nothing in LA, Gaines is the # 2 corner in Buffalo, and has an INT, 2 Forced Fumbles, and 6 pass defenses in 5 starts.

Later that month, the Bills traded LB Reggie Ragland to the Chiefs for a 4th rounder. The Bills now have a bevvy of picks to work with in '18, including 4 picks in the first 2 rounds.

Before the season began, the Bills were 200:1 odds to win the Super Bowl according to Vegas. The only team worse? The Jets, at 1000:1. Yet here the Bills sit at 5-2, the 4th best record in the AFC. And they have now added Benjamin into the mix as a new toy for QB Tyrod Taylor to throw to, joining the likes of Charles Clay, Lesean McCoy, rookie Zay Jones, and, when he gets healthy, Jordan Matthews.

You sure Beane is not setting the table for his return to work under Jerry next year? Just kidding.

Carolina North looks good. I think KB wanted out and can’t blame him. Shula would consistently take him off the field in the redzone. Team seemed to favor Funchess as their top big receiver target this year. Funchess works hard and plays with a bit more grit. Buffalo got a good receiver for very little but that cap hit looks pretty substantial next year ($8.5M).

Yeah, financials was definitely a part of Carolina's decision-making on this. If Benjamin was on the Panther roster on Day 1 of the new league year, that $8.5M would have been fully guaranteed. So the Panthers decided to move him now rather and get what they can.

I imagine the Bills are going to use the rest of this season to determine what to do with Kelvin long-term. Ultimately I expect they'll draw up a new deal for him in order to avoid that cap hit.

Either way it was a solid move. The Bills were sellers in the offseason but were able to be buyers at the deadline. And Kelvin is a legit WR1. It may take some time for them to get on the same page but he'll pair nicely with Tyrod.

Another weird note: If Kelvin plays on Thursday night, he'll potentially have a 17-game season this year. Buffalo has already had their bye and Carolina hadn't had one yet, so Benjamin effectively avoided his bye week.

Are we sure he's a WR1? He's had 1 1000 yard season and has regressed since.

As a proud Bills fan, AND UNCW Alum, I've been pleased. I'll be honest, I was a bit worried when we sold the farm during the preseason. Then out of nowhere the team just keeps winning. The AFC East as a whole has surprised everyone this year, but Beane seems to be doing really well up there and I hope the good times continue.
