Looks like the Georgia Southern and Mercer results have finally created some believers. KenPom stats had it before the coaches/press did.

The Bucs can't believe their own press clippings though. This is a team that can go places, but only as far as their attitude and effort will take them. Let downs could easily result in a repeat of Troy or NKU 1. They are not talented enough to just coast and get by.

Not that it means anything but in Joe Lunardi's way too early brackets for the NCAA tournament where he had previously projected Mercer to represent the SOCON in the tournament (largely as a place holder I'll grant you), as of his latest bracket dated December 28th he has ETSU as the SOCON representative. He has us matched with UNC, which would be a fun game to watch even if it is completely imaginary. The interesting thing about it is that he made this projection on the 28th, before we had even played Mercer.

Rankings are still pretty meaningless at this point - I'd trade that number 5 for a solid performance against UNCG.

As far as ranking first in the SoCon, the KenPom stats site saw that coming weeks ago, ranking the Bucs ahead of other SoCon teams even before conference games started. It seemed persuasive to me, so I used it as the base for my note on the SoCon after OOC games. We'll find out how solid that is after matching up with UNCG, Furman and Wofford.

As far as ranking all the way up at MidMajor number 5, I don't know. These CIT rankings are pretty fickle and teams jump up and fall pretty far and pretty fast with not much change in the record. The best argument for it is the solid road performance by the Bucs in those first 3 conference road games, which are way up there statistically by comparison to most other D1 teams.

If we keep taking the best mid majors out of the equation, sure we are going to move up. When you have a poll in which the top team isn't going to get an at-large bid no matter what happens, it really becomes a useless poll in my opinion.

Lunardi now has Furman as SOCON representative in "Bracketology," which probably means (as I suspected) that he is just rotating teams near the top as a place holder as it is hard to imagine that result of games since last week would make him think that Furman is now the clear leader in the SOCON. Pointless projections of post season possibilities at this point, of course, (as the only true Batman - Adam West - might opine), but there it is.
