Runners, long distance running info/advice
Any runners here on the board? Especially long distance running, like a mile or more. Interested in possibly running with my sons and maybe one or both of them might want to run for their school. Anyway, any advice on how far one should run, when just starting out? Thanks

I'm not sure I can help out on running distances more than a mile. I usually lost the police somewhere around a quarter mile or less.

Lol...I agree.

There is only one race under a mile that is not considered a sprint.

I normally run about 35 minutes once every two days.

I recommend reading the following as I think (based on my experience) it is good advice: https://www.runnersworld.com/training/th...ners-guide
And

Ok. So you’re saying you don’t know anything about running? Whether it’s a marathon, a 5k, a mile, or a 100 yard sprint? Ok. I simply was hoping someone here was an active runner and could give me some quality advice.

RE: Runners, long distance running info/advice
I run about 30 miles a week. But I've been building up to this for a while.

Start out with a goal to run 5 days a week. One of these days should be a "long run". One should be interval training. The other 3 days should be easy runs. Don't worry about your times. And if you need to, just walk some of the distance. For starters, 1 mile should be your base distance.

Day 1: 1 mile
Day 2: 4 x quarter-mile intervals (alternate speeds between running hard and running easy)
Day 3: 1 mile
Day 4: rest
Day 5: 1 mile
Day 6: 3 miles
Day 7: rest

Switch days to fit your schedule, but try to get everything in each week. Bump up your distances after 3-4 weeks for starters.

I say a beginning runner first otter get some decent shoes...based on weight and what surface he/she is running on.

Sidewalk is really hard , asphalt not as much. But a real track would be noice.

Good point. Shoes are very important and do not scrimp on quality.

High School cross country is 2.5 I think? Shoot for 3 miles. In the end you still have something in the tank on reserve.

Yeah, long time ago. I knew it was a damn long way. If you even wanted to try out for basketball you had to run cross-country.
