I think the defense played great yesterday. But if we had made just one of the dropped interceptions yesterday I think we would have seen more production on offense. Especially the one at their 10 yard line. Ugh! SW missed on some passes, no doubt. The one to Vaughn that took 10 min to review, would have been a big gainer if he hit him in stride. But the running game was weak. It looked like our line was not opening any holes. I am not impressed with the performance of this line. I have no answers there except they need to start moving some defenders. Still, very happy with the defensive performance. They were the biggest reason for this win that was badly needed.

On a side note, it seems like the coaches have no confidence in throwing downfield on 3rd and long. I like the screen play to Harper but they need to do that on 1st or 2nd down. If they are blitzing on 3rd try a slant or maybe a flare to Lowry.

With a QB that is green and has had issues with turnovers, there is zero reason to risk it. The defense gave up nothing, just play it safe and take the win. Playing it safe isnt sexy but no reason to try and push the envelope downfield.

A win is a win.
Marshall only scored 14 on the 49er defense.

On offense, the matchup didn't favor us as their base 3-4 is well suited to stopping the run.
I really hope that the coaches know what they are doing because, IMHO, SW would have benefited greatly from a redshirt season.
That he is a superb athlete is not in question.
It is difficult to assess improvement because UNCC has a poor pass defense.

Williams throws behind his receivers a lot. This affects yards after the catch, and is one reason that there are so many drops. He is often wild when throwing on the run. He still forces into coverage, although yesterday he seemed to have improved in that respect.
Is it just me or does SW look awkward when he takes off and runs?

Yesterday, our offense looked far more polished and effective with BL at the helm.

On defense, we were able to play Charlotte like so many have played us; defend the run and dare them to pass.
Kudos to Nagy for not playing so soft as to allow for short passes underneath and containing their running attack; especially Klugh.
This was a good effort against a respectable rushing offense, both from the players and the coaches.

I think we were playing it too safe. Even on the first drive deep on their side of the field, 3rd and long BL throws a screen to Harper. And with 5+ minutes to go and up only one score, we play like we're gonna run the clock out. It worked out but a first down would have sealed the game.

Ain't that the damn truth.....

I guess there are different types of people here just like the real world. Some set high expectations for themselves and things they are associated with and some that just takes what ever comes their way and be happy and just like the real world we have more folks here that fit the first category and then some that fit the later. I for one am very disappointed with how this season has gone so far and i am definitely not one of the people who are happy after the way we won. 6-0 seriously? Its not like i can change what's happening on the field but that doesn't mean i have to be okay with it. 6-0 is terrible no matter how you slice it.

Could not disagree more. 6-0 is terrible only when you are the "oh". When you're the "six", especially coming off a six-game losing streak, it's a big sigh of relief followed by a big smile.

I agree with your analysis. It's interesting because I didn't know about the SW oversleeping issue so when BL started I didn't know what to think. I started questioning the whole QB philosophy. There is no doubt SW would have benefited from a RS. But now that that option is gone, should we just stick with him to gain experience or turn each week of practice into a "tryout" for the upcoming game? Sounds crazy now that I actually typed it so I don't know. I really like the raw talent of SW but he needs development.

SW obviously needed a redshirt year despite being the best QB on roster. The only saving grace will be if a) he wins out and gets a bowl game and/or b) his experienxe this year allows him to be a better QB next year when the team should be more talented.

One thing I've noticed on the screen passes that seem to always lose yards, is our other receivers can't block with a lick. Harper is on his own, usually with 2-3 defenders crashing on him. Conversely, we play so soft other teams screens are almost always good for 5-7 yards. Really we'd wish get mote man/man, aggressive on D.
I see progress from Williams. I'll give him an off season, spring and fall practice to improve his passing to the receivers. If not better by next fall, we're in trouble.

I don't know. We have averaged 156 ypg on the ground this year, and we got 148 yesterday with Lawry at less than 100% with a hip pointer and with losing Cox to a shoulder injury during the game. It was a conservatively called game in an effort to avoid the turnovers that have plagued us -- and it got the job done. We have a -10 turnover margin with 20 turnovers lost through our first eight games for an average of 2.5 turnovers per game. Fourteen of those turnovers were interceptions, with the large majority coming on longer passes. Something had to change -- and it did.

I was very glad to see more slants and shorter passes. Long passes have been the interception maker. Hope we stick to the slants and crossing routes . Several pass plays had the receiver standing in a seam, waiting on the pass. That seems a more catchable pass for Williams right now. I think he still hasn't caught up to the speed of his receivers and that accounts for so many throws behind the receiver.

You make a good point. When you factor in turnovers and the lack thereof yesterday it makes sense.

ODU isn't an easy place to recruit right now but Wilder cant even recruit a punter.

Wilders other problem. He needs to start acting like he coaches a legitimate football team and act like he has some sense. He has gotten into this bad habit of going for it on 4th down somewhere in every game where he has no business doing it often times when we have leads or the game is close.

We are playing such bad football fans are going to leave and seeing Wilder celebrate and hearing him on the radio made me sick. Wilder you scored 6 points on a one win team that plays in CUSA. Wilder's record speaks for itself now and will buy him time but over the next few years that record is going to take a big hit and this isnt going to end well.

Went back through the game again; outside of the final score, we pretty much dominated the game. Here were Charlottes drives:

Yards:
5
9
31
0
5
43
39
33
9
23
9

Wow, 1 drive over 40 yards all game and only 8 first downs. We actually maintained the ball and drove, but had trouble finishing drives again. We have to figure out a way to beat the defense that plays cover 4 or cover 2. Really need to run the ball better vs. those defensive looks.

Our drives:

55 yards
49 yards
0
20
22
27
31
42
29
55

Averaged about 30 yards per drive, but rarely had field position.

AND it's ALWAYS in shotgun formation. So a 4th and 1 is really a 4th and 5. Bobby told me the QB can see the field better. Buncha crap IMHO.

Interestingly enough. The Ohio State fans were having a similar discussion.

Their coach must suck too. But there are some good explanations for why in there. Makes sense.
