NIU Announces In State & Out State same
Beginning Fall 2018, NIU has announced that out of state tuition will be the same as in state. I think the idea is progressive and will increase enrollment and create a more diverse student body. Illinois taxpayers have a legitimate gripe but this could really help NIU.

RE: NIU Announces In State & Out State same
this is awesome--how does it compare to in-state at Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan?

I know at Iowa it's much cheaper than NIU for in state. When I say much I think close to 8k-10k when my brother went there just 3 years ago.

I’m pretty sure other state schools are already doing this. At first I too thought it was a “progressive” idea, but later read most of the others are already doing it...

RE: NIU Announces In State & Out State same
Here's are some comparisons of full year in state tuition costs only:

Indiana University Bloomington In-state tuition $10,534 per year

University of Iowa - In-state tuition $9,190 per year

NIU - In-state tuition $14,351 per year

FYI - NIU's annual tuition is comparable to that of ISU and SIU. There is not much of a financial incentive for an out of state student to attend Northern. Also I think that ISU offers in-state tuition rates to kids from adjoining states (Missouri and Kentucky).

This would be great if we could get our tuition down to the 10k range. Crazy how upside down our state is, hope its turning around.

I went to the website of each university to get tuition and fees for a business undergraduate degree, on main campus, for 12 hours, fall 2017, in-state:
NIU $7175
Iowa $9189
Indiana $10534

The Iowa and Indiana numbers are for a full year. The NIU amount is just one semester. A full year cost at NIU is $14,351.

I stand corrected, thanks for clarifying for me.

That explains why enrollment is down.
With that choice I don't think I would have gone to NIU.

For an Illinois resident, NIU is still a better financial option than an out of state school. Out of state tuition (before scholarships) is still very, very pricy for an Illinois resident.

So NIU Tuition has gone up 2K in the last 13 years. That's not bad at all...

With room and board, books, etc., the total annual cost to attend NIU is about $25K.

Not entirely true. I send one daughter to Drake. It cost me less to send her there then to NIU after grants. The Wisconsin schools (except Madison) are much cheaper than going to NIU. The Missouri schools, Michigan schools are very competitive in their pricing compared to NIU. Indiana State is cheaper than NIU for Illinois residents.

I’m sure that’s on par with most institutions. That’s less than my bro paid for in state tuition, room, and board at an SEC school.
