A tweet about this said that the buyout has been reached for 4 million of the 12.9 due to the discrepancy over the "death threats", and (here's the important part)"the fact that his agent represents other interested candidates".
His agent is Jimmy Sexton, and yes he represents Dan Mullen too! And for those with interested minds he represented Houston Nutt (and many many other top names). Mullen reportedly was behind some of the Ole Miss allegations and Sexton would know since Nutt was his man too.
Nobody messes with Sexton because he knows where all of the bodies are buried both for coaches and administrations.
So McElwain's agent is allowing McElwain to be shortchanged so that he can get his cut of the next coach's contract. And McElwain is only going to walk away with $1 million if this report is correct. Pretty sleazy.

Both Florida and McElwain, who came to UF from Colorado State, each still owe CSU $1.5 million. One source said UF will likely give McElwain at least $4 million - $3 million to pay off what’s owed to CSU by UF and McElwain, with the other $1 million going to McElwain.
McElwain would be wise to keep Sexton. Sexton will get him another good job. Check out the list of coaches that Jimmy Sexton represents and has represented. You'll see what I mean.
If Sexton only went for enough to give McElwain 1 million a year for the duration of his contract then he had the goods on McElwain.
I'll be surprised at the end of Bowl Season if Mullen is not the new H.C. at Florida. It isn't unlikely that another P school hires McElwain. He did have a winning percentage of higher than .600 at Florida with two CCG appearances.
I wouldn't be surprised given his time spent at CSU if he headed back to the Midwest. I could see him at B.Y.U., Missouri, or to take a different tack UNC or Virginia. We'll see.
How good is the shark fishing in the Midwest?

Body double shark fishing photo bomb aside. He's from Montana and was Colin Cowherds roommate at Eastern Washington. I doubt he knows a Sheepshead from Trigger Fish. Besides screw shark fishing! I'd rather land a Wahoo or King, or bottom fish for Snapper or Grouper.

He could be a fit at either UCLA or Arizona State within the PAC. Oregon State is also looking, but I don't know if that's the type of job he would want. Texas Tech could also be an option.

Dan Mullen is the early favorite to replace McElwain.

But if he was really giving out fake news of death threats then yeah, its time to pull the plug.
Priorities! We can start firing football coaches for fake news when we start firing Network executives for it, and start firing the reporters who deliver it.
So I agree with your statement, but first things first!
