RE: This truly is the death of USM football
Jim McElwain is out there. I have a feeling Butch Jones isn't far behind him. Thing that sticks out with me though, is that Southern Miss is still in the conversation for the division. I learned quickly as a fan of UAB, especially after the Charlotte game, to take nothing and no opponent for granted. I admit, I was concerned about how UAB would respond after that. And I have the utmost trust in Coach Clark. But, this is a rivalry, hell THE rivalry in Conference USA. And I'm as happy as a dog in a butcher shop that we got outta there with a "V." But, I'm still having a good thought for y'all. Don't bury your team, find someone that will raise the life force in them and in you as fans.

I have no idea why fans of other teams are excited to beat us. Winning against USM is not a big deal anymore. We're just another mediocre team in this excuse of a conference.

One would assume it’s because they find winning a game preferable to losing one.

Not every fan base walks around with a cloud hovering over its head unable to find any pleasure in anything.

McGillis went cheap. He offered Hopson a lowball salary and also cut salaries for assistants. We are getting what we paid for. Monken and Fedora were making $200-300k more in salary than Hopson and the market has definitely moved upwards since that time. Our coaches are probably paid near the bottom of CUSA as a result.

If we want to actually compete, we need to pay enough to attract high-quality coaching candidates. It is the cost of doing business. If we don't want to pay it, we need to get out of the business.

The key word in that statement being “we.” “We”’re too concerned about the volume on the PA system and the choice of timeout music to worry about such trivial things as funding competitiveness.

Losing home games and not winning 10+ EVERY year.

ha ha thats funny. We should however win this crappy conference more often than not 8-4 or so is not too much to ask for and not losing at home to teams that we are favored to beat by 14 pts would be nice.

The short answer is lack of support from our own. The same donors have funded the program for years. Eagle Club membership and new donor cultivation have been stagnant. We have been stuck in neutral while everyone else has been in third gear for the past 10-15 years.

RE: This truly is the death of USM football
Axe-ually, a statewide poll commissioned by Ole Piss in 2011, indicated MISStake was the #1 football team in Mississippi, followed by USM, then the Land Sharks.

Two things happened since then----->HWSNBN and demotion to SUNWACUSA!

0-12 killed our momentum.....SUNWACUSA killed our fanbase. Exchanging ECU, Houston, Memphis and Tulane for ODU, Sweet Charlotte, UTSA and UNT damaged our brand, our ticket sales and, apparently, our psyche (when have we ever been 1-3 at home and 3-0 on the road?).

By the way: No reason a team with our recognition factor and dozens of all-Pros in the NFL, can't recruit a BETTER THAN AVERAGE QB (Hayell, A. Davis was a walk-on) to lead the team. Our skill players are good enough to get by in this crappy conference, we just need someone to play decently and get the ball TO THEM!04-cheers

I just don't understand why the State of Mississippi won't invest in one of their own programs instead of watching it die.

Because the powers-that-be only want TWO teams to be successful. IF they invested in USM (like, say, the state of Virginia invested in VA Tech) we might steal some of OP/MSUcks thunder----and that ain't ever gonna happen if they have their way.

Actually, we've lost a ton of donors that had given to the school for decades. The entire debacle between Hammond, McGillis, IHL, Bennett, and other factors led to a good amount I personally know stopping. And until they see actual leadership, they don't plan to give any more. To quote one, "I gave tremendous amount for over 30 years and nothing changed. Their student recruitment strategy was awful, no one listened to any of our ideas that seemed so braindead obvious even a kid could do it, and it's obvious they don't care much about losing my dollars because I haven't heard from them since." That's a pretty common thread I hear from many donors who used to have season tickets for decades and can no longer be found at the games.

Then why try to fight the inevitable ? If you're walking the plank, then just go on and finish it. This suffering can't go on forever.

Because, I for one, will fight OP/MSUcks til my dieing breath! Lots of 'kids" on here wanna play nice with those bastids...but their main goal has always been to underfund us, make sure we have no med/law school and always make us subservient and 3rd fiddle.

Like I have "said" before...we played along with them perfectly by electing OP a-holes for a hunert years....and while it's not as pronounced as it once was...the damage has already been done.
