Xavier, Ohio State, UC and Dayton in all-Ohio college hoops event?
I'm surprised nobody around here has picked up on this. Apparently OSU/Holtmann has been talking it up recently and Mack sounds like he's game per the article:

Xavier, Ohio State, UC and Dayton in all-Ohio college hoops event? Chris Mack is listening

Quote:In a Wednesday interview with The Lantern, the student newspaper at Ohio State, Holtmann said he's made progress with all four of the prospective schools involved.

another interesting tidbit from the aticle:

Quote:In addition to UC's home-and-home series with OSU, the Buckeyes will travel to Cincinnati Saturday for a closed-door preseason scrimmage.

It is nice to have someone up at tOSU that sees value in things that exist outside of CBus.

Are we playing with them after we play with ourselves?

Holtman saw the positives of this while at Butler with the Hoosier classic. Glad we've got someone up there who can see past the **** and get something done that should've been worked out years ago.

I'm digging this Holtmann dude. He's an "outsider" that sees what we've known for a long time - there's plenty of room in the pond to feature the top Ohio programs playing each other on a regular basis. The State of Ohio wins - or even more regionally with these four schools - the Southwestern Ohio triangle. Connect the dots...

You could call it The Ohio Battle of Four Series. Man, that would piss off the other Ohio schools.

I'm for it as long as the Crosstown Shootout isn't played at a neutral site

The Ohio Elite Four Series
The Southwestern Ohio Shootout
Ohio Four-Play

I've always called our rivalry the Crosstown Beatdown, because it rhymes.

This series could be a bit more difficult. The Cross-state... Prostate?

Frankly, I could care less where they occur. If they are in Columbus so be it, its better than the alternative where there is no series. That being said, I think the best thing overall would be to rotate it between Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton and I would even go to Cleveland and Toledo (even though those two cities would basically be home games for tOSU).

I think the bigger dilemma is that UC-XU don't want to have to play each other twice in one season to devalue the Crosstown Shootout.

If they can make it happen at Nationwide Arena instead of the Shoe, that would be great.

I'm ok with playing Xavier in the championship game, but not in the first game in the tournament.

^^ Do you mean The Schott (OSU's basketball arena)? Actually I think Nationwide would give tOSU more of the home court advantage. It is a smaller arena, has better acoustics (one of the issues with the Schott is that it is so cavernous it does not get as loud) and isn't that far from OSU campus.

Yeah, I meant the Schott sorry. The arenas are almost identically sized, but if you put it on campus, it's a de facto home game. Kind of an unfair advantage in my mind.

RE: Xavier, Ohio State, UC and Dayton in all-Ohio college hoops event?
I'm not as enthused about this as others, although I do see merit in it.

First, Ohio's situation isn't perfectly analogous to Indiana. Over there, you have three P5 schools with considerable pedigrees and a more recent high profile program in Butler. And Indiana is all about Indianapolis as the center of a state with no other major cities. None of the three power conference schools are located in the state capital; Butler is a smaller school so no fan base is really given a distinct geographic advantage. I can bet right now OSU wants this in Cowtown, annually, providing some degree of home court advantage.

Second, if OSU and UC decide the home and home is good for both schools and wish to extend it, isn't that better for UC? I thought Holtman had even gone so far as to suggest it should be the opener for each team each year. If so, best case scenario in my mind because it separates the top two historic programs at the two largest institutions from the rest of the pack.

Third, UC already has a home and home with X; it's the first home game sold out every year when they come to Clifton. Does UC forego that sellout (and revenue) some years to accept less money through a doubleheader with a four way split gate at a neutral site?

Finally, opinions here have been mixed at best on resuming play with Dayton. Yes, they have great fans and some tournament history. Archie Miller had them on a pretty good run...before leaving for a P5 job. But their pedigree isn't even close to OSU and UC.

Had OSU been unwilling to play UC on a home and home basis, this would have been much more appealing. With that series booked, this would be a consolation prize for UC that does more to elevate the profiles of competing programs.
