College football is a crazy world...Campbell appears to be on the fast track for a big time job, yet has never won a conference championship as a head coach.

RE: OT sorta: Campbell is a hot commodity
I guess we'll have to see how he finishes out this year as well. Tough set of games coming up where they could end up losing 3 in a row. Already mastered Oklahoma and Texas Tech, but may still struggle through the end of the season. Let's see if that team holds it together if and when they get beaten - more like when they get beaten - and face adversity. Riding high right now. I never thought it was a question of the X's and O's with him, but rather how much "PJ Fleck" is in him. I guess the same goes for Candle right now. I think Candle may have more fire than Campbell, but after last year's bowl game, I hope he comes better prepared for the big games and can rely more on the staff around him than in his first year.

I think going into Norman with a QB that has thrown 2 passes in career (who got put into the starting role the night before the game), and winning, is a nice start to handling adversity.

Nah...he fell in love with Ames, Iowa when we went there to play ISU, remember? I believe he once used words to imply it was a "dream job". Surely he wouldn't leave the nice folks there after such a brief stay, would he?

No, he's committed to ISU. To good of a person to fold his tent and move someplace else in 2 yrs.

I told people here who felt that he made a big mistake to go to ISU as that school could never play with the big boys, that all it would take would be one 7 win season for Campbell to get the interest of a big name major conference school-looks like it may happen this year.

I had the very exact (tongue in cheek) reaction as you....almost verbatim. Away if Campbell does hit the BIG big time making 5-6 millions a year, maybe he will remember his time at UT and throw a few crumbs of that obscene salary UT's way as a tax break if nothing else. I could be wrong but I seem to remember that Gary Pinkel funneled a few bucks back to UT after he started making "real" money at Mizzou.

They are definitely for real and you have to give all the credit to Campbell. that is a helluva turnaround in a pretty short period of time.

RE: OT sorta: Campbell is a hot commodity
yeah, will be real interesting if he stays. even if his teams are just good most of the time he will be the man at iowa st. any bigger job and he will face a lot more pressure to win. and if he can win in the big 12 at iowa st why go anywhere ? (other than alabama, osu, michigan). and how do you rank iowa st. the only team with 2 big wins over undefeated top 5 teams, but also 2 losses....

RE: OT sorta: Campbell is a hot commodity
The question was whether or not he would be able to get the talent to Ames, in order to compete. Well, he didnt so much. No yet. He showed it wasn't about the stars in the rankings. Same things call it the Beckman or the MU tree did here, they MOSTLY motivated what was in place, developed them well and found the under developed or at risk high school kid with lots of potential that weren't being recruited by the magazine readers at the power schools.

Could also be, he found a good match. What works at Toledo and Ames, under developed programs might not work in Gainesville or Columbus or the coaching rotation of LSU.

Good job done but also probably over-rated job being done by these 5 million dollar coaches.

RE: OT sorta: Campbell is a hot commodity
Could always be a case of "dodged the bullet" or we don't know what we don't know but the recruiting formula being used by the Toledo legacy coaches doesn't seem to be all that difficult to figure out.

We keep seeing the words "good character." They may not have the stars but they seem motivted to work hard and develop. Not a serious amount of injury so I would also suspect, find athletes a bit underdeveloped, haven't seen their potential in High School maybe because of location or competition. Give them the training someone a 4 or 5 star at an Academy or establiched sports school might already have gotten.

Seems very few academic casualties and those that don't stay, seem to find established programs to move to. Always important if someone has to go, easiest way is to find them someplace to go to. Very few off the field problems, either during their time at UT or after graduating. MANY positive stories of character and professional success after graduating. They become teachers and coaches and business people. They work in the community.

This seem consistent across the programs so this area of success would seem to go to AD's office too.
