Army has accepted a bid to play in the Lockheed-Martin Armed Forces Bowl, December 23 at TCU stadium in Dallas.

I'm gonna be "that guy". TCU is located in Fort Worth, over 45 minutes away from Dallas.
that's the equivalent to saying the Outback bowl is played in Sarasota; seems ridiculous, right?

Maybe within the area you guys make those kinds of distinctions, and take umbrage when they are transgressed, but to the rest of the world, "Fort Worth" is just part of Dallas Metropolitan Area. Same with Arlington, etc. It's all "Dallas".

Actually the correct term would be the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area.

I believe you. It's like a friend of mine who lives in Fort Lauderdale and hates it when people from far away says he lives in "Miami". He bristles. The locals take their community pride seriously and often there's a little brother/big brother complex at work as well.

But FWIW, to the rest of the world, that whole area is just "Dallas", like everything south of Palm Beach is "Miami", and everything within 25 miles of Ray-Jay is "Tampa" (ducks head as denizens of St Pete and Clearwater throw cups at me).

It's just how the areas got labeled from a national POV.

There are variations of this in pretty much every metro area of a large enough size. That being said, the reality is that to the neutral outside world, people generally see the North Texas region as "Dallas". I wouldn't expect anyone from outside of the Chicago area to have any clue of where I live (even though it's also actually a named city in the metro area designation) despite it being a very different place compared to the City of Chicago.

Oh you are right about the rest of the world. Cowboy stadium is in Arlington not Dallas. Actually the city of Dallas geographically is not all that large. You can bet that flight attendant that I referenced did not live in the DFW area

Not quite the same with Tampa imo, I know plenty of people from outside the area who refer to it all as Tampa Bay when of course that's only the geographic bay, not an actual city. And even then that doesn't cover it all, there's Tampa, Old Tampa, Mobbly, McKay, and Hillsborough bays. But enough people living in the gulf side of the area are transplants so it's not like a ton of them have immense pride in their city and will get pissed off like the DFW guy.

I get that in one sense it's semantics and I understand your overall point but Fort Worth is not Dallas, not even close. Not just from a distance standpoint but that they are two distinct cities. No one in Fort Worth would ever let you get away with calling them Dallas unless they meant the Metroplex, I found that out the hard way. Might as well say something in Oakland is in San Francisco.

I live next to St. Petersburg...I usually refer to living in the Tampa Bay (Area) to non-Floridians.

St Pete and Tampa have two entirely different vibes...and Clearwater has a vibe of their own too.

Tampa Bay actually and that's actually a fair description. It works there. Too bad there isn't something called Dallas Plain so you could call the area Dallas Plain.

I lived in that area - actually a city of its own called Temple Terrace, just east of USF - for 13 years, so i know what you mean. St Pete and Tampa in particular have very different cultures.

But to most people from elsewhere, it's all just Tampa, or thanks to the Bucs, Tampa Bay.
