Another interesting comparison

Craig Bohl - old NDSU coach is 70th highest paid FBS coach at Wyoming making $1,412,000. Also received $213,750 bonus last year.

Similar resume....

Dukester why you gotta be a dark cloud on a sunny day. We know JMU is a stepping stone to bigger gigs if you want a fatter paycheck.

I know that, but I forget how much coaches get paid until I looked at the salaries on USA Today.

Even the lousy coaches get a ton.

RE: Killer - Withers versus Houston
Amounts below aren't exact but give me hope that MH puts less emphasis on the $$$ than EW.

MH:
10 years ago, HS HC, $40(?)
5 years ago, D3 HC, $75(?)
At JMU, $375

EW:
10 years ago, NFL position coach, $175(?)
5 years ago, OSU Co-DC, $585
At JMU, $350
Now, $675

Crazy to think that a coach as bad as EW is a millionaire a several times over. Well, should be, but if he handles money as well as he coaches defense, he probably isn't.

Last year his salary was 300k and I think he got 82k more with incentives.

it's a great job if you can get that kind of money. lots of negatives for some, though: travel/moving (games, recruiting, and inevitably getting fired at some point, or just moving up the ladder and moving to wherever) and stress are two of the big ones. it's no cakewalk.

Houston is over $450k with incentives.

$250k in retention bonuses over the next 3 years will push him into the $550k with incentive range.

Should we repeat, Charlie needs to find another $75k raise for Houston and assistants. Make coach leave for an AAC or higher job, not CUSA/SBC.

RE: Killer - Withers versus Houston
Looking at the magnitude of a 1 year salary is kind of like looking at 1 year investment returns.

Consider this. Mike Houston would probably top out at $500k at JMU (adjusted for inflation). It is likely he could be offered a job at $1mm a year.

JMU has the potential to move into a position where JMU becomes a $1mm job.

At this stage, he could coach JMU as long as he stays above ground. Success isnt guaranteed elsewhere, but its likely that any deal would keep him around for at least 3-4 years, and more depending on success.

So do you take the annuity, or roll the dice and try to double your money? Thats really the question. Its not abut the immediate gratification of the raise.

I guess the question is how much should we pay him at JMU?

Pay him top comparable to a FBS sub 100 team, or based on attendance which would throw him in top 60-70 range

Withers attendance this year is like 18k. Houston's is near 25k

He needs to be offered a renewal with bonuses based off game attendance. It has skyrocketed these two seasons under his leadership of the football program.

Yes, and build the lower bowl! He will fill that up and that will help pay for his and his staff's increased salary.

RE: Killer - Withers versus Houston
Average sunbelt and MAC salaries are about 550-600k base

Average cusa looks around 700k plus

He brings more to our stadium than just about all of those three conferences.

Computer ratings indicate we are better than the tops of those three conferences.

Plus he's doing it with less scholarships and a cheaper budget.

Shouldn't he get paid top G3 coach?

I believe a lot of Wilder's contract at ODU is directly funded by private donors. Do the Alpha Dogs supplement any of Houston's salary?

Odu has 20k fans
Jmu has 25k fans

Who has the better team?
Who is doing it with a smaller budget?

RE: Killer - Withers versus Houston

HARRISONBURG — A year, a day and a championship removed from signing his first contract at James Madison, football coach Mike Houston now has a more valuable one.

The school and its coach agreed to stay together for the foreseeable future on Thursday, when Houston signed a restructured contract that includes an additional year and a bump in pay.

His annual base salary was upgraded to $375,000 and the deal runs through the 2021 season.

A year ago, Houston signed a five-year deal at $300,000 per year to run through the 2020 season.

For leading JMU on its run in the 2016 postseason, Houston earned incentive-bonuses netting $87,500.

The postseason incentives remain the same, but JMU added incentives into Houston’s restructured contract that would reward him should the school win the conference or he earn conference coach of the year honors or national coach of the year honors.

Houston said his wife, Amanda, and their two young sons are extremely happy in Harrisonburg, which is part of the reason why he wanted to sign the addendum.

“That’s easily half the equation right there,” Houston said. “With the kids the age that mine are, you don’t want to yank them around. We’ve moved three times in the last four years with the move to Lenoir-Rhyne, to The Citdael and to The Citadel here, and certainly, I don’t want to keep doing that. You want to establish stability.”
