RE: hot to schedule MBB
Isn't that what we already do? Try to schedule the Georgia State and top A10 teams? Our far flung conference affiliation limits our ability to go on the road against other conferences like the MVC, MWC, WCC, etc and there just aren't any other conferences nearby that have schools worth scheduling.

If you read the story, you'd see that Adams said other schools should do what ODU is doing. That runs contrary to what a lot of people on the board said when the schedule first came out, which was the point of posting, to give another informed POV.

Cant be true...lol

That's a good article, thanks for posting. What Adams says seems to make sense.

Good to see the league is actually trying something new. If they listen to this guy, perhaps we won't see any more D2 games and a bunch of near-300 RPI cellar dwellers.

RE: How to schedule MBB
When I used to run my website, we did an interview with Mark Adams about mid major basketball (this was a year or two after George mason's run but prior to VCU's.

He was extremely adamant that GMU's run would be something repeated again soon because of how good mid major basketball really is and how overrated the big 5 really are comparatively.

We discussed them rarely ever playing on the road out of conference and rarely ever playing high level mids on the road. We discussed mid majors being battle tested.

A few years later we have vcu, gonzaga, Wichita state, butler etc. all being "the norm".

He was one of the most excitable guys I've ever spoken with and he LOVES mid major basketball with a passion. We'd do well to heed his advice, even if it is tough.

My dream/wish for basketball would be a VA State Tournament with all the D1 schools from the state in December each year. 14 teams with single elimination

This guy can't be referencing this years MBB schedule. He has to be referencing past ODU schedules. His overall comments have merit regarding scheduling. I just don't see how having a mid level mid major program in a horrible basketball conference can achieve what he is suggesting. Maybe if we were the top 1 or 2 program each and every year I could see it.

RE: How to schedule MBB
I think the interesting take from the article is his suggestion to keep open dates available at the back half of the schedule. If every mid major conference did that (besides A10 and AAC) then we could have 'last minute' fill ins so the top teams from each conference play each other. If this was predetermined and agreed upon at the beginning of the season, it's another guarantee top match-up for each team. Radical indeed, and really tough logistics-wise, but a really cool change if the conferences could pull it off.

The other thing mentioned briefly would be seeding the CUSA tournament based on results, not necessarily record. This way you ensure you have the top 4 teams fighting it out based on the full season rather than just the CUSA standings. See example UTEP 2016-17.

Not this year's schedule, but definitely the current (and past) scheduling philosophy. Don't schedule guarantee games, but try to push for home&home (or at worst a 2 for 1) with larger teams. Scheduling exempt tournaments starts at least 3-4 years out. I remember hearing rumors of being part of the 2016 Atlantis tournament 3 seasons prior.

Obviously, a lot of conference scheduling falls on the heads of the conference. First and foremost, Judy MacLeod needs to take a strong stand and mandate that conference teams not schedule non-D1 teams for regular season games (or at least, limit it to only 1 game). Teams at the bottom of the conference have been getting away with 3/sometimes 4 games a season, and this needs to stop.

Also, the best teams playing late is crucial. Due to the spread of CUSA, I'm not sure that leaving open dates would be logistically realistic. One solution could be to go on the previous year's end-of-year standings to help structure the current year's schedule. If not playing teams late in season, at least have the top teams play each other twice during the season.

RE: How to schedule MBB
I don't know..... If Marc Adams says ODU is scheduling correctly, I still don't think it's good enough to land at-large bids without being perfect in the conference. If 27-4 wasn't good enough for Middle Tenn. St., why would it be good enough for ODU? Aside from Milligan, Middle Tenn. St.'s out of conference schedule was pretty decent. UNCW, @ Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, @ Belmont, @ VCU (4-1 in those games) - pretty respectable but not good enough..... hmm...

Now, I am not saying ODU needs to change the way it schedules. I like watching ODU and I like having 6 home games out of the non-conference schedule. I just think the whole NCAA selection process needs to be adjusted...

I think the key here would be the rest of the league scheduling the same way ODU is. Rising tide, if you will.

I think we need to completely stop scheduling MEAC conference games. These games hurt us in many ways...and losing to a MEAC team ends all chances of a bid..I look at these games simply as a way for a coach to pad his resume .

I hear you on scheduling MEAC...maybe limit it to just NSU to continue the intercity connection. I agree about strengthening our schedule with things that we can control. However, it is painfully interesting that this is the same philosophy that P5 schools have in playing teams from our conference.
