OU played Mizzou in the Big 12/SEC challenge in 2015. OU played A&M in a neutral-and-neutral (OKC, Houston) series in 2013 and 2014.

Mizzou and A&M participate in the Big 12/SEC Challenge when asked. I remember Iowa State playing A&M. In this event, though, Mizzou has not played KU, and A&M has not played any of the Texas schools.

A&M did play Texas in a tournament in the Bahamas a couple of years ago. I don't believe that was purposely scheduled.

Last year, IIRC, KU played a home game in men's basketball against Nebraska. They've also played Colorado in hoops (I don't remember if it was a home-and-home).

The rub is between KU-Mizzou and Texas-A&M. I think Texas and A&M will eventually play. As for KU and Missouri: they won't play for a long time.
Thanks for noting that, with the examples, Johnintx. I overlooked the challenge since it is a conference to conference set-up and agreement and less one to one negotiating. I recall something from KSU a couple of years ago indicating fairly firmly they would not be playing Mizzou in bb. Again, that is dated a bit.

Recall, if I got this correctly, when the Champions Bowl (Sugar really) was announced initially, it was shortly after Texas A&M and Mizzou left. So, I suppose the animosity is fundamentally a school to school situation.

Yes, the basketball challenge is sponsored by the conferences, but the schools get input for scheduling. Missouri has only played in it twice: once against OU, and once against West Virginia. A&M has not played a Texas school in this event..and they play at Kansas this year.

The conferences even keep this in mind when scheduling bowl matchups. In 2014, there was an opportunity to match UT and A&M in the Houston bowl. Instead, A&M was sent to the Liberty Bowl to play West Virginia, while UT played Arkansas in Houston. From what I've read and sensed, they'd like a better stage to resume the rivalry than with a matchup of two 6-6 or 7-5 teams.

The animosity is a school-to-school thing: Texas schools/A&M, and old Big 12 North/Missouri.

So I would imagine that if Kansas ever gets an invite to the SEC, Kansas State will hold a nasty grudge and refuse to play them again? It was not personal... it was a business decision. Travel costs between MU and KU are nominal. Wanna fly to BYU or Syracuse? Be our guest. Missouri will continue to wait at the 50 yard line for you. We don't need Kansas, it would just be nice. 04-cheers

On a football-related note, we should probably be glad that the Border War at Arrowhead isn't going on anymore for the sake of viewer sanity. Wouldn't be pretty to see the two going at it with where both programs are nowadays, it'd probably resemble the pre-Snyder K-State vs KU games.

Missouri left the B-12. If no one from that conference wants to play them in any sport OOC then so be it. It is Missouri's loss. However on another note the big money they are getting from the SEC will soften the loss of these games and the knowledge that other old B-8 foes (Nebraska and Colorado) left the B-12 for the money and to get away from Texas too will soften this blow too. Heck even old time rivals like Texas A&M and Arkansas left for greener pastures and to get away from Texas and their attitude too. Next up Oklahoma unless they can dominate the B-12 with Texas and get big money matching other P5 conferences too. Missouri and the Kansas schools will eventually rekindle their rivalries when it is mutually beneficial to all and the money is there OOC to do so. 05-stirthepot 07-coffee3 04-cheers 03-shhhh 02-13-banana 04-jawdrop COGS 03-idea 03-shhhh

it sounds like Big 12 schools are afraid of playing their Pac 12/SEC/B1G defectors. Kansas home football attendance could sure use the bump in playing a former rival because their current conference mates are hardly bringing anyone to Lawerence

essentially Bill Self is still butthurt that a meh football program is still more prestigious than a championship level basketball program when it comes to conference invites. The big 12 was falling apart and KU was very close to becoming a mid-major while Mizzou got into the best conference. Rivalries are for the fans, and they should be playing the game for the fans/taxpayers.

One would think a strggling football program such as Kansas, would want to take advantage of the available opportunities to receive added exposure and perk fan interest. Playing intense, nearby rivalry games can be a part of that. For the long haul, it may attract a few more good recruits.
