teams that can make the playoffs
Well with the season thru week 8 just about- I think there are 16 teams that still have much of a chance at playoffs...

ACC- NC State, Clemson, Miami, Va Tech
B12- TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St
B10- Penn St, Ohio St, Mich St, Wisconsin
P12- Washington, Wash St
SEC- Georgia, Alabama
Notre Dame

Washington and Washington St SOS will probably eliminate them- except with maybe 1-2 teams. Still going to leave them on here right now.... But Pac 12 is really in deep trouble right now.

next week we get 1 elimination game- NC State @ Notre Dame. also You get Ohio St will a win or out game with Penn St.

I think right now right now we have 6 teams undefeated that if they win they're probably in- Miami, TCU, Penn St/Wisconsin, Georgia/ Alabama. Given Notre Dame plays Miami- if they win out they are in. I'd add Ohio St to the Big Ten mix as well. So 8 teams who control their own destiny right now.

RE: teams that can make the playoffs
I think the ACC may be in trouble as well. Miami has not had a convincing win recently while playing weaker teams, and Miami still has Virginia Tech and Notre Dame left on their schedule. Maybe Clemson or Miami makes it to 12-1, but another loss by either of those two prior to December will be problematic.

If NC State makes it to 12-1, that loss to South Carolina may haunt them if Georgia or Alabama's only defeat is a close loss in the SEC Championship game.

Virginia Tech can make up a lot of ground by beating Miami and either Clemson or NC State in the conference title game, but they may need some help from the Big Ten and Big Twelve to clear the path the Top 4.

Lets be honest, we have about a 1/4 of 1 percent chance.

yeah the ACC is in trouble if Miami loses. If one of Penn St/Ohio St/Wisconsin win out- tough to see them out. If TCU wins out, ahead of ACC. Alabama/Georgia. And Notre Dame.

Looking-
Alabama/Georgia- have about a 50% chance of winning out.
Penn St/Ohio St/Wisconsin- have about a 68.8% chance of winning out
TCU- has a 5.8% chance of winning out
Notre Dame- has a 19.3% chance of winning out

The big thing to me for ACC would be would they get in over say an Oklahoma coming out of the Big 12?

USF and UCF still have an outside chance if there are a few two loss champs.

no. Not enough OOC for them to have any shot.

RE: teams that can make the playoffs
Let's be PERFECTLY honest.....

There's NO WAY IN HELL the committee will take USF/UCF over a one loss P5 conference champion or ND.

Just ain't happening. Hell, I'd even go as far as to say a 2 loss P5 team would get consideration over them.

Bottom line, stick to your NYD bowl and like it.

Pretty much win or out for Penn State, too, because if they lose to Ohio State, then they would need the Buckeyes to lose two more games.

not totally. If Mich St beats Ohio St- would wind up as a 3 way tie at 8-1. Ohio St would get knocked out due to the Oklahoma loss, and then Penn St would have tiebreaker over Mich St due to head to head.

Yeah we aren’t winning out. I think we are solid, but tough schedule with @OU, @ISU (who looks legit), @Tech, UT and the CCG. Baylor only easy game and they are still playing better lately. Realistically, we are looking at 1-2 losses.

I do think a 12-1 Big 12 champion will be a factor, although will prob need some attrition help. Probably true in general- 12-1 champs from power conferences are usually going to make it. This year with ND in the picture does complicate things though.

RE: teams that can make the playoffs
I very much doubt both Georgia and Alabama get in, the committee is going to be loathe to put two teams from a conference in the playoffs.

So right now, I'd bet the SEC and B1G champs are in, the PAC is out, and the other two slots will be filled by two of the ACC champ, Big 12 champ, and Notre Dame.

If Notre Dame wins out, they are going to be hard to keep out of the playoffs.

it's easy to see both Georgia and Alabama getting in. Pac 12 out pretty easily. ACC sees Clemson losing 1 more game, Miami losing to ND and 1 other game, and then you're looking at a very weak champion there. Stanford beats Notre Dame.

so you'd have-
SEC champ
Big Ten champ
Big 12 champ
It'd be between Georgia/Alabama, a weak ACC champ, and a weak Pac 12 champ. hell, frankly the biggest competition for Georgia/Alabama could be say a 11-1 Penn St team.

Two will make it some year, but it will be a year with several 2+ loss P5 champs and will likely be from the same division.

This could still be that year.

I agree it could happen, I just think the committee will bend over backwards to have it not happen. If it's at all plausible to sneak another P5 champ in ahead of Georgia (assuming Bama wins the SEC), they will.

But i agree it may not be plausible to do that. 07-coffee3

ND has three more games vs. ranked teams and two of those are on the road. Their loss is a one-point loss to a top-5 team. If they win out, the only possible way they would not be in is if the committee's decision for the 4th spot is between ND and UGa.

That could actually work in Notre Dame's favor as the CFP can avoid the guaranteed rematch between Alabama and Georgia.

teams that can make the playoffs
Much to my dismay, no team from the Western US will make the playoffs, nor will the G5 access bowl will go to the MWC this year. The west is very mediocre this year.

the only semi-realistic hope would be Washington, but they would need a whole lot of help.
