Whether the haters want to admit it or not, this one fact alone shrank the talent pool of coaches who would even be willing to take over that mess. I will never forget the day Larry told me he walked in and asked Justin Crouse to show him the recruiting board. There was none. And then Crouse wanted to offer three Calif. JUCO guys that the previous staff had never even been to see. Fact.
But Larry’s done well since, Memphis has done well since, and MTSU still has Stockstill along with West and Mallory. They are 3-4 and drawing about 5,000 fans per game (15,000 reported). Sound familiar? It will be out there for all to see tonight vs. Marshall on ESPN2. Tommy West, the gift that keeps on giving at Memphis, UAB, USM and now MTSU.
Are you really blaming the systemic indifference of MTSU sports on West? He's just a position coach.
Fact is, Stockstill is a solid HC who puts together pretty good teams for that place but no one ever cares.
He has turned into Tommy West 2.0. After 11 seasons, no outright conference championship and one bowl win in ‘09. He’s been slaughtered in the postseason by 3 MAC schools, Hawaii and Navy. But thanks for trying.
Credit due to Porter actually recruiting pretty well to a school that was in the toilet.
He actually greatly improved the talent pool from what West left...But I don't think he would have done much better with more talent...He just wasn't head coach material.
I don't know how greatly he improved it watching us warm up against UT Martin Fuente's 1st game made me question who was the D1 school

go frick yourself op
Porter lettered four years (1990–93) at Memphis, serving as co-captain of the 1993 Tiger squad. He closed out his carrer with 2,194 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns, ranking seventh in school history in yardage and tied for fifth in touchdowns. Porter graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in education.
RE: When did y'all realize that Larry Porter was bad?
I knew right after the first series for MS State. Flags for illegal formations. No adjustments. They just kept send a guy down the middle and burning our safeties. Awful game. Had to watch it with a State fan.
Sure Larry is a great guy. Wanted him to succeed so bad. However he was so far over his head. We needed an experienced head coach at that point. Or a high level OC. Not an up and comer.

Yep. That's what I was referring to as well. He was truly a horrible head coach. Truly horrible.

We were outmanned in that game. Obvious on TV. Martin was bigger than us.

Watch ESPN2 tonight and the DL play. I’ll wave at you. Won’t be hard to miss me in a 3/4 empty stadium.
They moved Raider Walk to the front of Cope Admin Bldg. so it wouldn't look empty for TV pregame shots. The Grove next to Stadium where normally held is empty.
Go Blue!

He did all of those. Was a major disaster as our football coach though. All of his accomplishments as a player are great. All of his failures as a coach are greater.

^100% this
Also when we wouldn't commit to one offense.
Larry inherited a team recruited by Tommy West. A team built to play the spread. Porter wanted to play the pro style he had been under at LSU. Our guys weren't talented enough to be able to line up and play that way.
In year 2...he blew that all up and decided to go back to the spread. An equally disastrous season followed.

He ran off a good QB because he was so intent on running an offense the QB wasn't suited for. Then, after the QB left, he switched to an offense the QB would have been perfect for. Then the QB excels at Miami before injuries got him.

BEFORE we hired him. Do not believe in hiring a position coach who has never been a coordinator to be the head coach. Only thing he had on his resume was that he could recruit AT LSU. Almost anyone could recruit there.

He also led a walked out on the coach because team got off to a slow start. Losing a few close game early in the season.

No doubt...the UH fan support is HORRIBLE. I was embarrassed for them. Terrible representation for UH and the AAC

Our conference is doing great stuff
UH fan support isn't helping.
Last time Memphis came, attendance was over 42k, this time barely 30k. Applewhite killed the program with a losing season.
Hopefully he's fired at the end of the season, should have been fired Thursday night.

If I recall correctly, the Larry Porter era began with 2 illegal formation calls in a row. The best writer reported that they brought in league refs to the next practice to teach his team how to line up properly.
So, 4 minutes or so into the first quarter of the Porter era I’dnestimate.
