Since I'm not local to Memphis, I suppose that doesn't include me. But I know he can coach - might just need a little recruiting help.

I dont mean fans, i mean the recruiting and competitive coaches. Most of the hate and he cant recruit is coming because he doesnt want to play ball with the insiders. But we see where that got memphis with the larsons.

Amen, brother. Good riddance. Let's see what Tubby can do with his own guys. I don't believe for one second that we will finish 9th.

So we lost 70-64 in a 40-minute game. Not bad.

My sense is Tiger fans want a return to NCAA Tourneys and win games and they care little about how he does it (within the rules and the law).

All coaches at Memphis that lasted three years since Bartow (1970 through 1974) made the NCAA Tourney within two to three years upon hire and only nine coaches in last year's NCAA tourney earned more money than Tubby (he makes about $3M a year) . Furthermore, the infrastructure is in place for success (e.g., a state-of-the art facility will be shortly occupied). In sum, Tubby is well paid and well resourced. There is no excuse for failure. It is results that matter.

Today's scrimmage results are a good sign. I believe Tiger fans hope it is a harbinger for a fruitful season.

Yup...Lebron had fear in his eyes by the second half and clearly didnt even want the ball in his hands.

Tubby has one NCAA win in ten years and two losing records out of the last four seasons. I can understand why AAC fans want that outcome for Memphis, lol, but I believe Memphis fans expect better results. Hopefully, the AAC will fear playing the Tigers in the near future instead of penciling in victories like you will probably do this season.

Did Houston and Baylor both go into this game to win or build up their teams? Without any other information, Gray scoring 25 would indicate Houston was possibly more interested in winning than building but I realize that my analysis without seeing the game is likely a flawed attempt. I just know that our best players rarely score above 20 points under Marshall even during the regular season.

Rob Gray averaged 20.6 ppg last year so him dropping 25 isn't anything new. Now the fact that he had 11 assists is an eye raiser, but at the end of the day the game was just a scrimmage. Still Cool to know we can hang with a quality team like Baylor in their building but the win doesn't mean squat.

both teams definitely played to win...but players from our teams were held out for injury precautions...our starting pg and projected #6 of the bench were both held out.

and its a scrimmage in front of their fans, which they promoted to see the new look baylor...it wasn't a secret scrimmage ...

also i read a pre-game analysis on baylor, it listed who they thought would be their best competitors, they all got over 30mins..they had their stars play the whle game..

i said in my post earlier in the first page that it was a scrimmage so you shouldnt dive into it too deep...but saying we were trying to win and they werent is pure dismissive and not accurate..
as a matter of fact we have a 14 team roster besides the 3 held out players all 11 played...while baylor only played its key players all game, even after they fouled out (you could play after fouling out)

How many minutes did Gray play is probably a better barometer on my question. Otoh, if Gray is so valuable that to stay in the game, Sampson is forced to play him lots of minutes, no one wants to get blown out or lose to sit him some minutes. But if Gray has to play to stay with good teams, Houston will likely lose a few games because of it. Depending too much on one player is not a winning strategy in the end.

Duh. However, having a player as lethal as Gray creates opportunities for other players to score. Especially when teams opt to double team him. As for his minutes, he played 34 in the scrimmage but part of that had to do with our starting PG being held out of the game. Once Galen is healthy Gray's usage rating we naturally decrease.

look at baylors minutes!!!
baylors best player played longer than gray

just from your comment, i cant tell you are basing this as someone who hasnt watched any houston basketball last year, and didnt even look at the box score, of either team...
you saw best player scores a lot in win...instant assumption with no knowledge of the team "baylor wasnt trying, houston was, you are going to ware out your best player using him that much'

but preface since you arent familiar...we were crazy reliant on gray last season, he played 32 a game. (not far from the 34 a game this year)..and we finished 3rd in the league and would have been a tourney team had we not had a week OOC.
we are actually expected to rely on him way less this season than we did last
