The 5 losses to current SBC members:

ULL (3 times)

Texas State

And I'm still mad we lost to Texas State that one year...

. . and honestly, you can thank limping into San Marcos with an injury depleted roster for that . .

But . . you know . . we'll take it . .

The Wolves looked as good as any Belt team has looked this year in a conference game. The stAte vs. Troy game should be a barn burner!

Not if TROY doesn't find an offensive identity quickly. Our D is solid but the O is more like Oh No...

ULL came into the game last night a perfect 100% in the redzone, and they left a perfect 100%...... They never reached the redzone last night.

When running backs are sweeping and getting tackled from behind it is going to be a hard night for you.

Hud has let the talent level slip from what was left for him. He coached that talent much better than Bustle but he hasn't improved the roster from what I see.

Yeah, Cajuns only points were on a 50 yard FG. I don't see you guys making any of those this year, so the offense will have to improve.

Of course, we're going to have to do something against a real defense at some point as well. We just finished playing 3 of the statistically bottom defenses in FBS. NMSU is a little better defensively than these three, but the real test will come with the trip two weeks later to South Alabama.

I can’t believe HUD is the highest paid coach in the league.

I felt like Hud up sized his shirt yesterday and ditched the usually Smedium.

May have been too much blood making it to his brain, he just couldnt handle it.

Watched some of the game last night

1) How the heck did you lose to Nebraska and especially SMU?
2) Damn shame you didn't get a chance to beat Miami there in Jonesboro

We ask ourselves the same questions. We should have beaten Nebraska. No excuses. I actually think SMU was better than Nebraska, plus Hansen got hurt.

1: SMU is better than Nebraska

Nebraska came down to little mistakes. We moved the ball at will, but the defense struggled to slow down the running game, and failed to force a turnover. We still were very close to winning that game. We had little penalties and turnovers that just ate us alive most of the 2nd half that day

SMU was pretty much the same thing. Roughing the kicker penalty turned a FG into a TD. Our TE fumbled reaching for the end zone late in the half of a 3 point game, Anderson made a terrible decision to go for it on 4th and 13 from the 35 and our QB got hurt and sat most of the rest of the game.

For some reason it takes us about 4-5 games to get into gear. This year got thrown off entirely by the Miami situation. An unplanned Bye week 2 when you have a very young defense you are trying to give game experience too can really delay development. Given time, we can be dominant. Many forget about it, but we remain the last team to beat Central Florida. That's an example of a game in which we benefitted from having played several games before we ran up against a tough OOC opponent.

Team has a bunch of newcomers after losing a big senior class to graduation and is improving just as they improved last year as the season progressed.

Had a chance to tie Nebraska in the final minute and just overthrew our tall WR in the end zone.

Hansen got hurt in the first half vs SMU - we were going back and forth with them until our stud TE was making extra effort to score and freakishly fumbled forward into the end zone to give them the ball on the 20. The team did not respond well from that point forward, and the backup QB is no Hansen.

This game, like the USA-Troy game, runs the danger of being over analyzed. Basically, state ran a great game and their opponent got behind on the road, then got desperate, then got unraveled. ULL is probably not as bad as this result, and state is probably not as good (if they were, they wouldn't have lost to anyone).

Here's what I saw from the game from the perspective of teams that have to play ULL and state

ULL - Kind of hard to say, but it looks like their secondary was a mess. Not just getting beat, but not even being there. I suspect they'll fix that going forward but that's something to try to exploit. It also looks like a team with a competent QB that can also scramble/rush is a problem for them. I don't know how ULL beat Idaho, but I suspect USA will be looking at those tapes. ULL didn't bother to put any real pressure on the QB either. What ULL did was NEITHER defend the pass well nor pressure the QB. I don't care who you're playing, you're not winning many games if you can't do either of those things.

state - hard to really find much. But I think one thing is to try to get some pressure on the QB. This can be done even more effectively if your defense can actually credibly defend the pass. Looks like their QB, if he runs, likes to run up the middle. Special teams were a bit 'meh' for a team that was clicking. If Hansen is all that, then get up in his face. He certainly will be all that if you don't pressure him and give him a 5 yard buffer right in front of him to start running.

--

I expect ULL to come to Mobile mad and motivated. And we should be prepared for the team that showed up vs state to not be the same team.

Our kick off coverage was great. Our punter is phenomenal.
Our kicker was 2/3 on field goals.

If that’s meh, I’ll take it.

I thought I saw some issues with your punt/kickoff receiving team. Again, just looking for vulnerabilities.

Kickoff issues are intentional:

Anderson coaches return men to planet feet at goal line and only return it if ball comes short of that. We prefer to take the touchback because a team is giving us a quarter of the field

Likewise, we intentionally do not kickoff for touchbacks. We are heavily coached in spotting kicks. We feel a touchback is bad for the kicking team now, and would rather force a return.

Anderson is correct on the kick coverage as well. Go look how many times ULL started behind the 25 for example.

We’ve given up 8 punt return yards this season.
