I'll just go ahead and get it out of the way...Purdue. Nothing about Purdue, I just know NJ wants to talk about the school.

RE: Out of conference basketball scheduling just got a little tougher
:-)

Tribe did play at Purdue, Rutgers, and Maryland in the past ten years, and is playing at the Buckeyes this year.

Those games may be hard to come by now. If yes, at the very least, there's going to be a hole in a budget that requires three away "pay" games.

ACC going to 20 game conference schedule the following year.

Now, as to who we're going to play in the non-conference ... another can of worms.

We're going to have to adopt the A-10 scheduling edict: Schedule teams that will help your Power Ranking, win..or lose.

Did we get a game with the boilermakers? If so, that's all good.

Well, for what it's worth, I called the last meeting between the two teams, in the Boilermaker Classic in 2001. It was the first game of Gene Keady's final season as Coach.

Out of conference basketball scheduling just got a little tougher
I asked an assistant coach about this game and he was dumbfounded. Do we have this game in late December?

What is happening is clear. This is not rocket science. Do we have the will?

It would be also be nice if schools could spend at least $3 million on basketball.

Thus sayeth the article cited above.

W&M spends about $2 million. JMU and CofC, for example, spend $3 million.

I like the ideas in the article. They seem like no-brainers and I would hope that we would get on board.

However, we have directed our MBB team to play 3 guaranted games per year to balance the books. Our OOC home games suggest we are spending approximately 45 cents on that front.

We can talk about a dedicated basketball facility (I would kill for TD Arena) and scheduling enhancements (please, please) and our improved recruiting (how long are we keeping Kotie Kimble with his recent success?) but until we address the elephant in the room (money) we aren't going anywhere.

I don't know if that proposed basketball booster's club meeting has occurred yet but we need to work out an arrangement with the Athletic Department that allows us to increase resources devoted to MBB. I thought the premise of the report on Competitive Excellence (or whatever it was called) was that individual programs would be released to fund-raise and otherwise grow their programs. I don't see where that is happening yet.

Sorry - had to vent.

"In general, Adams recommends teams avoid taking guarantee games as much as possible, that they limit games against non-Division I opposition, that they play in exempt tournaments and schedule at least six home nonconference games."

In addition to spending less than $3 million on hoops, we are pretty much doing the opposite of the above strategy.

We still have no indication from the new AD, if the direction suggested by the For the Bold program, for Athletics, will be followed.

Does the $2million we spend on basketball, as opposed to the $3million others spend in our conference,
include the fact that all our 13 scholarships are endowed as of a year ago? I'm not sure it does---and who on this board really knows---and if it doesn't then we are closer to the three million than it appears.

I very much doubt most CAA schools have their scholarships for basketball all endowed.

The last numbers I saw did include scholarship money, but were pre-endowment. Does anyone know if the endowment will increase the overall mbb budget, and if so by how much or if it in essence frees up funds for other sports that were spent on mob previously?

My understanding is that even if the funds have been transferred, the process requires a couple of years before the w&m foundation would release any funds to the athletic department. (So investments would have a little time to yield revenues.). So we've seen no impact yet.

Now the question about the budget is a really good one. The best I can say is that I encourage you to ask.

This game happened on 12/29/12. Our guarantee games this year are Ohio State, TCU, and UCF.

According to the 2016 auditor of public accounts that Mr. Ribe referenced a while ago:

Basketball expenditures were $1.9 million
Student aide (scholarships) were $624k

So no, that $2m budget is not after the endowment. We are working nowhere close to a $3m budget. We need to find some more money.

Bake sales? Bank robbery? Someone here wins the lottery? Cut other programs and channel the $1m into hoops?
