Jeff Davis school renamed for Barack Obama
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/oba...ol-n811956
So they trade the name of the worst president in American history for the name of the second worst. Not much of a trade-up.
Jeff Davis is the one (after Nathan Bedford Forrest-but there isn't a lot named after him) I can most understand renaming. I have no problems with anyone outside Mississippi renaming something named after Jeff Davis.
Now this was in Mississippi. But its also a 98% Black school and it was done through discussion starting in the school, not among politicians or outsiders. That is the way these things should be done.

The question is whether the city council will now try to change the city's name. It shares one with Stonewall Jackson and is named after President Andrew Jackson, a slaveholder.
I can see it happening.

I say this in all sincerity - are there no other African-Americans deserving a school named after them? I mean, BO will have PLENTY of schools named after him in the future. It's almost too easy a choice.
Besides, I am still very much of the opinion that naming something substantial, or building a statue of, a living person is inappropriate and frankly, creepy.

Anyone wanna bet there will never be a school named after Donald Trump (I'm not including ones he names after himself, or donates millions of dollars to so they name a building after him)?

That seems like a losing bet on your part. He is President of the United States ya know?

Jeff Davis school renamed for Barack Obama
Its a local school board, they can rename schools as they please. I have no issue with it. None of my business.
I do ask that those districts who prefer to remain Rebels or Indians or Robert E. Lee have the same local option.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ed...presidents
This list may be incomplete (it is Wikipedia after all) but according to this page, there are only 30 presidents (out of 44) who have had educational institutions named after them. The ones who haven't are John Quincy Adams (unless one of the Adams schools is named after him and not his dad), Zachary Taylor, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Donald Trump. There are some on that page named Roosevelt - I didn't check to see which Roosevelt they're named for but I'm assuming both of them have at least some school named after them.
Obama already has had 7 schools named after him, which is 3 more than Reagan according to that Wikipedia page.

Good point. Clements HS in Sugar Land Texas was named after the Texas governor, first Republican in over a century, who was also later the chairman of the SMU board of trustees who approved the payments to players and got them the death penalty.
There should also be a period of time after death so emotion doesn't take over. A terminal in the Houston Intercontinental Airport was named after Congressman Mickey Leland shortly after his untimely death. Besides having nothing much to do with the airport, he died in a plane crash! Just not a good decision.

There are schools that have been named after Grant and Garfield. Don't know if they are still open, but there definitely were some. I seem to recall a Chester A. Arthur ES somewhere.
(edit-quick look-Garfield HS is in LA-that is the one I remembered. There is another in Seattle. There are Ulysses S. Grant HSs all over. Even a James Buchanan in Pennsylvania-looks like it might be the only one named after him-its in his home county).

RE: Jeff Davis school renamed for Barack Obama
Curious, so
John Quincy Adams HS-Los Angeles
Zachary Taylor ES-Louisville
Rutherford Hayes HS-Delaware, OH-home state
Chester A. Arthur ES-in Manhattan, looks like another in Philly
Grover Cleveland HS-several in NY state
Benjamin Harrison HS-in Puerto Rico
Andrew Johnson ES in both Tennessee and Oklahoma. There was a HS in NYC.
Jimmy Carter MS in Albuquerque.
George W. Bush ES in Collin County TX (Dallas area) and one in, of all places, Stockton, CA.
So that is all past presidents.

So are we at a point that every generation is going to rename everything they don't like?
Some of them I can understand, but most of it is absolutely ludicrous.

Sever the connection between the people and their culture and history. Culture and history is only the party's culture and history.
Red Guards. Cultural Revolution.

just wait until they figure out the eponym of the city where the school is located. that should be fun.

FWIW, there are already a bunch of schools named after Obama, and in fact there are even a few named after Michelle as well. I know in the Cleveland area there is a Barack Obama Elementary school.
As someone else posted I am ok with it if that is what the school board decides, and likewise I would want progressives to be fine with the fact that a school board would name a school after someone they oppose as well.

Seeing how the NEA and school districts lean liberal they're gonna have to have numbers after OBlunders' name because they'll all want to name it for their fearless leader.
