FB has been very important to NIU.
Basket Ball far less so.
It is disappointing that NIU's student enrollment has not increased to a larger size.
Academics does precede sport.
They do need to pay the administration less and maybe find ways to allocate more towards
The academic staff.
It is obvious you don't like basketball.
NIU was a strong basketball school for the many years that football was in the crapper.
The Convo was not a bad decision.
No one knew that our basketball team would stink for so many years. If they played like we think they should play, the place would be filled.
The Convo also generates revenue from several events held there.
Both academics and support staff would like more money and have not had decent raises for years. Blame the State, not the administration that has created miracles in the years there was no state budget.

If NIU doesn't agree to play FSU there would have been layoffs.
Don't tell me athletics doesn't help academics.

The one thing that professors don't discuss is the massive value of their pensions which are worth a couple million dollars each if you live 20 years after retirement and include the cost of their health care. Its a crazy amount of money!

I would argue professors deserve that money more than football coaches (who make millions by working for just a couple years at a school), but your point is valid.

Education has a non-profit mission of which Intercollegiate Athletics is an important member. If you could sell me that NIU could be the next University of Chicago by going DIII, I am all freaking ears Professor Huron.
Exactly, great comment. Dislike EMU all you want, but there are plenty of academics just like Bunsis working on the NIU campus right now as well. Bunsis is just a tenured union hack that likes to twist numbers to fit his 'college athletics is ruining academia' narrative. Not sure how this turd has become a supposed expert in this argument, other than his 'accounting' title, his big mouth, and his penchant to lie for the cause.
He's the same idiot expert that ESPN went to for their anti-athletics story a couple year's back. If he and his minions had their way, ALL MAC athletic programs would be cut back dramatically, since they ALL 'lose' tens of millions of dollars per year. He and his movement will continue to lie and twist the facts until they get their salaries, benefits, and pensions doubled........................for the sake of the children!

Profressors maybe 20 years ago, professors today are just spewing political propaganda and are essentially political recruiters.
All of these are good points. I think inflated pensions hurt more than the sports programs. This guy uses data of no raises recently. The state didn't have a budget for three damn years so sports had nothing to do with that. Typical political garbage. I'm disappointed someone paid to bring that d-bag here. Shameful that they are spreading a divisive message when niu needs support from staff to potentially grow. Niu foots the bill whenever these types come here. How about that for money wasted.

No, these two things are not connected in any way, shape, or form. Sorry but this is not how a university budget works.

SF has been quoted saying that the FSU game payout did prevent further cutbacks in the athletic department...so it depends if you are considering the athletic department budget as part of the university budget. Academic professors weren't saved by the FSU game though so it definitely doesn't apply in this conversation.

Armour said it much better: Academic professors were not saved by the FSU game. The FSU game helped the athletic department fill the gap created by the university limiting what it gives to athletics, which in turn may have forced athletics to make cuts.
