Surprise should be a no doubter - it's UAB. They have got a heck of a coach.
Disappointment - Charlotte, UTEP and Rice are FCS level bad. ODU is trending there as well.

Don't worry, we still don't care about North Texas

For nine years I lived in the Richmond area and moved back to Texas this summer. I was very excited to have ODU join the conference hoping I'd get a UNT football game close to me.

Nope.

Thanks a lot CUSA schedulers.

Aye. I am broken inside. US Men's Soccer failed to qualify, Packers lose Aaron Rodgers, TSM fails to get out of group stage, ODU lost by 30+ for the 4th straight time. It was a tough sports weekend, to say the least.

Biggest disappointment? USM not starting Kwadra Griggs the first half of the game vs. Kentucky and losing 24-17 AND blowing a 21-7 lead vs UNT at home and refusing to put the ball in Ito Smith's hands.

Biggest disappointment is a 3 way tie between UTEP, Charlotte, & ODU but for different reasons. I knew UTEP would regress without Jones, but this is just sad. I expected Charlotte to go 5-7 or 6-6, this is disappointing. I personally had ODU finishing 2nd in the east behind MTSU, but I don’t see that happening now.
Biggest surprise would be between UNT’s offense & Marshall’s turnaround. I knew UNT’s offense would improve but... these numbers... dang. Marshall has a down season for whatever reason, but now they’re back to their old self.

RE: Biggest Surprise/Biggest Disappointment In Conference USA Football 2017.
Biggest Surprises: 1. North Texas improved vastly in the off season. 2. UAB has a good coach and has been stockpiling talent, but they've come together as a team better than I thought they would. 3. FAU seems to be turning it up under Kiffen in year 1. 4. Marshall has returned to form and I was afraid their coach had lost them after last season.

Biggest Disappointments: 1. Charlotte was supposed to improve or digress slightly, not fall off a cliff. 2. MTSU was a favorite in the East for many of us. 3. ODU seems to be hovering on the edge of the same cliff Charlotte fell off. 4. FIU has been bad, but showed some nice signs of life this past weekend.

Biggest Surprise: UAB. I thought they'd win a few games, but in my wildest dreams I did not see them starting 4-2 (likely 5-2). They are also leading the conference in attendance (30,631) after four games. #welldoneblazers

Biggest disappointment: Charlotte. I thought we would tread water this year and maybe take a half step back, but in my worst nightmares did not see us being this bad. #firejudyrose

Your statements as usual are ridiculous. Yes odu has underperformed, but for good reason. You decided to show up on these boards after a mediocre season and acting like the bama of texas. Kick a team while they are down, fair, but we have accomplished more in our short time here than north Texas has. Congrats on last years 5 win season, hope us odu fans never have to take comfort in a 5 win season.

Fair question...
I never picked UTEP to finish last, I thought they'd compete and contend... I sure as hell didn't see North Texas coming. It always concerns me when a coach resigns before the middle of the season, which is what Sean Kugler did. Did he lose the locker room?

I wont say i saw nt coming. The surprise for me is the amount of firepower they have. I thought at the time Littrell was hired he was the best hire made by a g5 that year.

I really expected utep and wku to be better than they have shown.

We're not taking comfort in last year's five-win season. We're taking comfort in this year's all but guaranteed six-win plus season. Things are looking up for us for the foreseeable future and that's the reason for confidence. The 5-7 season, after going 1-11 the year before, just spurred our confidence because it showed we were on the right track.

I wish y'all had gotten that darn Wolfpack, too. LT had South Carolina beaten but couldn't put them away late. If a couple of intangibles had gone UAB's way, the Blazers would be unbeaten as well. The Herd still be Thundering just the same. Thank you for the good thought about UAB.

I was on these boards before ODU's resurrected program even played a down of football. In our first season in C-USA (2013), North Texas won 9 games and whooped UNLV in Heart of Dallas Bowl. In 2016, with 5 wins, North Texas played Army in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. This season, North Texas is almost a lock to go bowling again. That will be 3 bowls in 5 seasons. Yes, ODU had a good season in 2016, and won a bowl game, but like I said a few month's ago... It was just one season. I believe most would agree, our 2, working on 3 bowls seasons, is more of an accomplishment then ODU one good season. My statements you label ridiculous have turned out to be true. You just don't like it.

Looking forward to our game in a few weeks. 05-stirthepot

Little sensitive there don't you think. I doubt any opinion based on ODU's play by non-ODU fans has anything to do with what their favorite school is doing.

ODU is a very obvious pick for most disappointing team based on their pre-season ranking and current performance.

As you have so artfully noted, NT fans are very familiar with losing seasons. This means we should be viewed as experts in recognizing bad football.

RE: Biggest Surprise/Biggest Disappointment In Conference USA Football 2017.
Biggest Surprise - A hurricane forcing the cancellation of a game in San Antonio.

Biggest Disappointment - Losing in the waning seconds in consecutive weeks, by 2 points and then by 3.

------

Btw, we seem to have a history of blowing close games. We've had 12 games in the last 3 years decided by one score, and we lost 9 of them. The only three games we won in that span were over an 0-6 Baylor team this year, a 3-9 Rice team last year, and a 2-10 Charlotte team the year prior.

Our cumulative record so far during Frank Wilson's leadership has been a mediocre 9-9, but we haven't fared well in the 2nd half during those 18 games...

1st Quarter: +37
2nd Quarter: +68
3rd Quarter: -2
4th Quarter: -18

Granted, part of that can be attributed to a couple blow-out wins where we played backups in the 2nd half. But even being mindful of that, we don't look to be a very good 2nd-half team most of the time, especially when you lose 9 of 12 games that come down to one score.

The tale of the tape with us seems to be that if you're at least a halfway decent team, and you can keep it close for 3 quarters, you'll have a 75% chance of getting the win in the final quarter.

I don't remember UNT's offense being this good last year. I expected reasonable improvement, not division-leading. Kudos! La Tech and ODU were both predicted well even though they were both breaking in new QBs. USM was the same but predicted middle-of-the-pack. I think a lot of people overlooked the improvement of the defense late in the season and didn't expect it to build on it.

Biggest Disappointment - CUSA failure to compete against fellow G5 schools
SMU 54 - 32 UNT
Navy 42 - 19 FAU
UCF 61 - 17 FIU
