I'm sure Uremovich (who is calling the plays, not Carey) doesn't prefer throwing long incomplete passes. Obviously he prefers running the ball and short high percentage routes when Childers is in the game. I'm not sure you can say that the deep passes were bad calls when a few of them would have been sure TDs if the QB had any accuracy whatsoever. You're also complaining about throwing deep passes but then also about the box being stacked...deep passes would presumably make the box more open. Uremovich can't run block or throw deep balls, both of which seem to be issues for this team. If Childers could complete even 40% of his deep passes then the offense would open up. If the offensive line was creating consistent running lanes then we wouldn't be getting two yard carries.

Bingo!

Bingo!

Throwing long passes doesn't open up the short game. Hitting long passes does.

Okay, so are you suggesting that they abandon long passes altogether and just run the ball? Then the box would be even more stacked. The coaches can't throw the passes. Childers has to execute on those plays.

I'm just wondering if he's ever going to hit those with enough frequency to make any difference. Seems like he has to change the trajectory of his passes. We lost the BC game when Graham couldn't hit the deep throws to wide open WRs. None of the 3 QBs had that much time with the 1s this offseason since they were splitting time, but Santa somehow managed to hit those a few games in a row (okay, he only hit one IIRC against Nebrasksa).

That's fair to wonder...but the coaches still have to try those long passes, especially when the guys are running wide open most of the time. We're basically playing our third string QB for the 3rd (4th? 5th?) year in a row. Santa certainly throws the ball better but he also turned the ball over at an incredible rate. FWIW I think Santa should still be starting because he throws the deep ball better, but I don't know what's going on behind closed doors, at practices, etc. I also don't know why Santa was rarely running the ball. At first I thought it was to protect him from injury and avoiding putting Childers out there, but at this point that doesn't really make any sense since they decided to go with Childers over Santa.

Yea I assumed he wasn't running since Graham was out and they didn't want to have only Childers left, but that theory appears to be out the window. Santa did look slower this year, it seemed to me. Not sure what's up with that.
