For over a year I commuted every weekend from New Orleans to Houston. That was a good 30 years ago but even then Houston was a really interesting place--a bona-fide international city with people and neighborhoods from all over the world mixed in with some stereotypical Texas bubbas. Maybe a cross between Los Angeles and Little Rock, lol, but everyone seemed to get along well. It was like Ellis Island. A city with a lot of energy. I think it was Frank Lloyd Wright who said Houston was like living inside a pinball machine, lol.

The area around Herman Park/Rice Univ on S. Main is beautiful. I would pick some place to eat--it's one of the best restaurant cities in the country with every imaginable ethnic food. Galveston is a wonderful old late 19th century city if you have the time.
