Navy - Kicking Game and a Few Random Thoughts
One thing that I think went under the radar in this game was how surprisingly "better" our FG kicks were against Navy. Riley Patterson missed his first one at 41 yards, but then went on to put 3 good ones through the uprights at 30 yards, 42 yards, and 42 yards. We would have lost the game had he not hit those 42 yarders. If he can become a consistent threat in this range, we will be a much better team.

Defense was spectacular - you could tell they really did their homework to prepare for this game. There were several plays where you could tell they were just waiting in anticipation to tackle their backs as they pitched it back to them. Austin Hall was player of the game without a doubt.

Offense was not in their best form for the night. Riley Ferguson had a couple of bone-headed 3rd downs and even picked up a safety (can't remember the last time Memphis got a safety - Porter years?). Anthony Miller missed an amazing touchdown pass you would normally expect a player of his caliber to catch, and the receivers also dropped a couple other direct passes. Nevertheless, they did enough to help win us the game.

All in all, this game gave me a lot of optimism about the potential of this team. There will be times when the offense isn't in "Highlight Reel" mode, and we will have to step it up in other phases of the game. Improvements in FG goal kicks and Defense showed we can do just that.

RE: Navy - Kicking Game and a Few Random Thoughts
My thoughts:

#22 on defense was playing 10 yards off the receiver. The run came his way and he backed up. I can see playing out of position but the lack of desire was troubling.

Navy really helped us out at the end of the game. Even though they scored they took several minutes off the clock. We are terrible at taking time off but they helped us out there.

The offensive play calling was pretty stale. I can pretty much tell what play they are going to run. Some crazy decisions. Throw a long pass on first down. Throw another on 3rd down. Two straight plays where Riley takes a long drop and Navy is all over him. It seemed like a screen pass might have been a good option. Late in the game 3rd a 5 and Ferguson runs it? It seems too predictable and doesn't allow our playmakers to make plays.

Terrible timing. Magnifico drops a pass that would have been close to a touchdown. At the next break they have a video honoring him. He's earned it, just bad timing.

It seems like there have been a few games where Ferguson comes out overthrowing people. Just weird.

We had very few penalties in this game which was good to see.

You can't really ask our injury riddled defense to do a better job. Great defensive scheme.

Glad to see Patterson hitting those FG. He has some mighty big shoes to fill.

He is a freshman. Just needed to get a few games in to finally get the big picture.

RE: Navy - Kicking Game and a Few Random Thoughts
I was shocked we tried so many field goals, but it was worked out pretty good. Patterson is a freshman, and it's possible his leg strength will improve.

#17 was doing a better job with kickoffs. Got several into the endzone which is a big improvement. There was one line drive head hunter though.

#22 is scared of contact. He needs to Tiger up. He still finished with 6 total tackles i believe. I think we are so thin at the position, the coaches just have no choice but to play him. I'm sure the coaches told him to give that type of cushion, because his decision making and technique has been questionable so far.

The defense really won the game for us. The offense dropped the ball. I will agree that the playcalling was a little bad at times and even predictable. I expect them guys to bring it in the next game and be more efficient.

Austin hall has really developed into a leader on the tiger defense. He has improved so much from last year athletically and strength wise.

I wondered what happened to the WR screen. Then we ran it 3 or 4 times on one possession.

Couldn't believe how #22 was able to be a starting safety for the Tigers. Ran away from plays instead of trying to make plays.

I did not see #22 running away from plays. Seemed to me he was doing exactly what Norvell preaches....stay with your assignment. I do think he misread a couple of times tho.

Also played basketball at Dothan High School ... Helped the Tigers basketball squad to a 26-4 overall record and an area championship.

For the first time, Norvell named Patterson the sole FG kicker for the game. May have taken some pressure off him.

I agree that Fergie has come out a few games and overthrown. Ball sailing on him during the 1st quarter. Sign of nerves, but he doesn't seem the type.

I did not like much of the offensive play calling. They can't stop us, we don't have to go deep so often. Plus the fact that the OL looked shaky again on pass protection.

Game ball to much maligned Coach Ball.

Agree...

We take so many shots that we end up in many pressure situations on 3rd down.

I know people hate the screen passes for 3 yards but it keeps you ahead of the chains.

I love our screen game, especially when we're trying to use up clock against Navy.

Going deep all day will lose you games v. Navy.
