It was rainy. Tommy West was on his last legs (although that is only a figure of speech because apparently per his divorce papers, he was not on his last legs!). RC - or SOMEONE - strategically decided to have the TURNSTILE count and not the # of paid tickets to be announced. The # of tickets >>> greater than turnstile count and to this day I KNOW that it was strategic (and in the end it did help get TW fired).

So, my question to Btiger or other insiders:

WHO made the decision to announce turnstile count? RC or a booster or what?

btiger an insider ... haha.

Hotdamn! I must be an insider too!!!!

It was also an odd Tuesday night game.

I'm guessing many of you are too young to remember the 70's and 80's. We had some 4,100 type crowds back in those days...

No, I remember the late 1970's with fondness as D Back U. I remember a packed stadium for SEC teams, some of which we beat. I remember beating UT on the hill one year. I remember a morning game with Vandy at the Liberty Bowl.

This. 2nd biggest reason, after the weather, IMO.

I remember memphis basketball/om,utk,msu,ark football fans declaring Memphis football dead and should be shut down, with all resources poured into basketball.

they still look stupid

I'm seeing a lot more UT fans coming to our football games now.

Well, I don't think UT is going to be relevant for some time now. They are going to fire Butch and start from scratch again. It will be close to 20 years since their NC and they haven't been to a BCS bowl THIS century. South Carolina is solid, Clemson is unreal, Georgia is solid and, unfortunately, Tennessee is not a particularly high talent state.

My feeling is that the Memphis-based UT fans will slowly, but surely become Tiger FB fans. They already are.

Surprising that UTK is still able to pull in top 10 recruiting classes. One ranking scrolled across the screen last weekend and UTK popped up at #7.

Their 4-star RB decommitted this weekend.

There were a couple of times we should have beat them. But you're memory is tricking you if you think we beat them at K'ville.

Memphis memory or a Vandy memory? Vandy beat them 17-14 in Knoxville in '75

We probably has more business winning the 1999 game than we did the 1996 game.

Of course just a few short years later there would be games with so few people there that in the 2nd half you could hear the players talking on the field.

It was the "perfect storm" for that debacle. Terrible weather leading up to right before kickoff, the game was on ESPN, and we were terrible. I remember it not just raining, but pouring all day. Then, about 15 minutes before kickoff, the rain moved out and the weather was great for an evening football game. Everyone that watched that game on ESPN probably thought it was a pee-wee football game, or a band competition, not an NCAA Div-1 football game.

I happened to have stadium suite tickets for that game. I sat upstairs in one of the suites for the first half, so I got a very clear view of an empty stadium. Those suites were an embarrassment. I doubt they have changed very much since 2009.

Weather was the biggest factor. Being 2-5 was a bigger factor than being on a Tuesday night.

Yep. I was working with a bigtime UTK booster at the time and he admitted it. He said we beat them in 96 with "smoke and mirrors". Whatever. But he admitted we took it to them in 99.

Yep, go on and commit me. It was Vandy, and it WAS fun. I will never forget a special Nashville player who had an amazing part in that game and the preceding two UT games ~~ Barry Burton. May God rest his soul. He died at the age of 40. http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/histo...16aab.html

We beat them in every aspect of the game in '99 other than the score. Their fans applauded our team as they left the field, because they knew they deserved to lose that game.

Agree in '96 that we had more special team yardage and int return yardage than offense until the 4th quarter. I won't say it was completely smoke and mirrors because our Defense definitely stepped up, but I will say that we deserved '99 and got lucky in '96.

2000 was pretty even, as in neither team 'deserved' to win, IMO.

I wasn't there, but I watched the game. I had started calling for his head (before the game), and after that game...damn near everyone else followed suit.

*fair disclosure* I thought that the defensive coordinator Mike DuBose should have been made the head coach. I was wrong.

When Peyton made the announcement he was coming back for his senior season in 97, Vawls fans were ecstatic. I told them, sure he was coming back. He looked on the schedule and saw that he doesn't have to play Memphis.

We had him confused a lot that day. Sure he made some plays. We moved the guys around on him as he was checking off. (Never understood why more teams didn't do that to him over his career.) Got 2 int's and a few sacks including the game clincher.
