Who cares what others think? Watching FCS games with teams working toward the playoffs is great fun. I don't get all this crap worrying about what "other" people know or think. I will take the FCS over G5 mediocrity any day.

Do you follow D-II or D-III or NAIA closely? How about CFL, arena, etc? They all have "teams working toward the playoffs".

You follow FCS because of JMU, not the fact they have playoffs. Or else you've got a lot more time on your hands than I do.

He predicted that the rise of streaming and the huge reduction in cable subscribers will lead to ESPN renegotiating contracts to be with individual schools instead of conferences. As soon as those conference contracts are broken, it could (repeat could) lead to a free-for-all to more regional conferences as far as non-P5 schools go to reduce travel costs (which would probably make up more than they're making on the non-P5 media contracts anyway). Basically...Rhode Island would no longer make as much media money as JMU and Boston College wouldn't make as much as FSU. If this happens, we may see our east coast conference materialize quicker than we thought.

I probably missed some context but who is the “he” in your story?

I mean, if the pinnacle of G5 last year is so great, they should remain nationally relevant this year and everyone cares, right?

If that's your benchmark, there wouldn't be that many nationally relevant teams at all, when asking normal people. Maybe that's your point, but that would mean that the majority of P5 is nationally irrelevant in your eyes. Not a very good test IMO.

why would that not be the G5 benchmark?

they were the G5 representative in the NY6 last year. Went undefeated. hosted GameDay. Ranked most of the year.

if G5 leagues and schools are so relevant, I would expect that kind of season would make them relevant again this year and in the national limelight in some capacity.

so how are they doing? no one has yet to answer. Or is it possible they went right back to where G5 schools reside...in irrelevance.

1. Do you think WMU's football ceiling is higher than JMU's?

2. If no, then would you agree JMU should be capable of what WMU did?

3. If yes, do you think ranked FCS #1, winning FCS national championship, and getting GameDay in the same year even remotely compares to Top 25 FBS, GameDay, and a NY6 against a #8 Wisconsin???

If WMU is irrelevant after the season they had last year it's not because they're G5, it's because they're WMU. And your whole argument is predicated on JMU being no better than WMU.

In conclusion, here's what I think of your argument.

RE: Lol...CUSA fans
I thought that was why we're making standardized test scores "optional". That's the only rationale I can think of for doing something like that.

I was not a fly on the wall when the making standardized test scores optional conversation went on,but if I had to bet my money on the why it almost certainly has something to do with improving diversity.

I follow JMU because they are my team but I might become less interested if they move up to a FBS conference with no playoff opportunities.

I have said this before and I will say it again. If having an FBS football team is so important to you why did you go to JMU? You should have gone to Tech or some other FBS school. That way you wouldn't be disappointed and you wouldn't be fighting to ruin things for other people who like it just as it is. How long have you been a JMU football fan? I have been an ardent fan since 1976 and I like it just the way it is.

You've been a fan of JMU since it was Madison College. Why didn't you go to a University if that's what you wanted? Instead you went to a College. Did you approve of the change? If so, why did you want to ruin things for people who liked it just as it is?

Interestingly, according to JMU one of the original foes of the name change himself was Uncle Ron. Advocates wanted a change for one of the same reasons pro-FBS people want it, to gain prestige. The case for FBS isn't as apparent and the move not as easy as it was to go from Madison College to James Madison University, but advocating positive change for any organization you're in, whether your college, a club, or a company, isn't unreasonable of itself. The particulars are what matters.

Change for the sake of change is not always positive. Some things are good just as they are.
