if it had been up to me we would have concentrated on advancing our already established and successful sports programs and left the thought of starting football behind. but then again, i have no interest in football... so here's to our basketball programs (and others) moving in the right direction once again, and shame on this football coaching staff for putting whatever that product is on to the field of play.

I would be perfectly fine with having Richmond's deal had ODU the football program with no intentions of having FBS football. Once you go up, stepping down isn't really a good option — it looks awful (do you see anyone thrilled with Idaho returning to the FCS and Big Sky, even though it's a logical fit for them?), plus the CAA isn't the CAA we remember, especially if JMU finally makes the move. Outside of Richmond and W&M, who else from CAA football do you wish ODU was playing every year? On top of that, who says the A-10 takes ODU? They said "no" a few years ago when football was still FCS and ODU was casting about for a place to play with VCU and eventually George Mason on the way out.

CUSA as it's constructed now isn't the final destination but it absolutely is an appropriate place for ODU athletics in their state of development, crummy TV deal and wide footprint notwithstanding.

Conference USA is hot garbage, I don't know how anyone could defend it. It's a joke that ODU, Charlotte, Marshall, UAB, and UTEP are stuck with these other schools but it's what our leadership thought was best. They made a bad choice, so we may as well make the most of it.

There is nothing to say we are in this conference forever. Its JV football and mediocre basketball or big boy football and mediocre basketball. It was the right move to move up when we had chance. Wont be like this forever.

No denying that the conference as a whole is not good but we should actually win a conference championship in football or basketball first before just talk trash. We're part of that hot garbage right now

No we shouldn't. The conference is terrible is a completely independent statement from we need to get better.

The conference plays a part in our basketball woes, so saying that we should spend eternity trying to win a conference that is lowering the ceiling for our basketball program is just poor logic.

No, I don't follow spider football but I'm not a UR fan. I did follow CAA football though and enjoyed it very much. Richmond also won a national championship there. As far as basketball goes, Yes, over the last 10 years or so Richmond basketball has been as good and frequently better than Old Dominion. Especially head to head. They've also had more success in the NCAA tournament. The thing about the tourney is you have to get there to have success. CUSA makes it much harder to get to the tournament than the A10 does.

Agreed, but we should consistently be top 3, in contention for a top seed and going to the NIT or NCAA frequently. Maybe Im spoiled, but when I was at ODU we went to 2 NCAA tournaments and two NITs. No player should ever spend 4 years at ODU and never experience the NCAA tournament. Thats unacceptable.
