Washington DC- the worst sports town in USA
With the Nats loss last night, it's now been a whopping 69 seasons since one of the 4 major sports teams made the semifinals of the league..... Last team to do so was the '98 Caps.

the 2nd worst city is Cincy- with a paltry 44 seasons.

And it's been a dreadful year this year...

Redskins lose to Giants last day of the season.
Caps get knocked out by the Pens in OT in game 7
Wizards get knocked out by Celtics in game 7
and now the Nats in game 5

Cleveland, NBA excepted, still gives them a good run.

but you can't except the NBA. And even there, Cleveland has had some World Series runs in the last 25 years.

I don't watch hockey, so you have to go back to the 1991 season for me. Cincinnati is only that good because they have no NBA team. Cincinnati hasn't been to the Final Four in 25 years, so make it 69.

Washington isn't so bad. The worst place is a place like Milwaukee or Philadelphia.

and the Eagles got to the Super Bowl not that long ago- and Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals. And in college of course Nova won the title in hoops.

The Eagles made the World Series almost 15 years ago. That's quite awhile.

mixing Philly teams...

Phillies made WS in 2008 and 2009
Eagles made Super Bowl in 2004

But even more than that- Eagles made Conference finals in 2008. It's been 20 years since any Washington team made the conference finals even- and if you take out hockey, it's been since 1991. That was when Bush 1 was president.

Yeah, yeah...Washington teams have won 2 titles in the last 30 years, that's better than many places. Their baseball team was the Orioles for years, meaning they've had ALCS teams as recently as 1997.

Milwaukee is much, much worse. Sure they've been to the NLCS but they've generally been irrelevant for years. The Bucks? LOL.

Yeah, but that's almost to be expected when you're such a small market. The Milwaukee metro area is smaller than Providence now - not really an excuse since there are plenty of successful small market franchises in baseball and basketball, but it's more understandable than Philly or DC's struggles as a huge city. I think Milwaukee would've been a good city for NHL expansion in the nineties for what it's worth, I was always surprised that one of the more hockey-centered states in the north didn't have a team.

well if you say that for Orioles, then Milwaukee gets Green Bay.

Baltimore is in biking distance from Washington. Green Bay is way across the state. They haven't even played a game there in a quarter century.

Milwaukee has been in the bottom five in NBA attendance each of the last six seasons, in addition to being a relatively small market, so if it were my money I wouldn't be looking to add an NHL team to that market. Maybe NHL would be ok if there wasn't already an NBA team there.

I agree, and by this point most of the fan base up there are probably Blackhawk fans.
