Well there are illegal immigrants who have been all but held in slavery in the US, women, especially illegal immigrants, forced to be prostitutes. There are some pretty nasty people out there.

Real story. Appears that the cook was mentally disabled. He lived in a roach infested apartment behind the restaurant, working 18 hour days for $1000/quarter and getting regular beatings. Awful!

Sounds like he was bullied and assaulted..not enslaved. Report says he was "intellectually disabled". I guess he was just not that bright? WTF does this mean? In any rate the owner is horrible person and I hope the gets punished appropriately. Ive been by that place many times on my way to MB. Never had the inclination to eat there..and now never will.

Im not sure being "intellectually disabled" means anything. Sounds like some psychobabble IMO. Ive worked with a ton of people I could have called that. Instead I just call them dummies.

Yes in the article, physical restraint was involved.

That's not necessarily true. Admittedly, they are using slavery pretty loosely, but peonage and forced labor are covered in the same law. It doesn't mean you're not allowed to leave by physically being locked up or something.

Like a lot of words...What constitutes slavery has been expanded from its initial definition. If the owner did what is alleged?... I have no problem with it being called Slavery and him being punished for it. It is however not what we generally think of when slavery is mentioned. With the addition of actual violence, this seems to be a similar thing that happened to blacks after emancipation. Many were given housing by employers... paid very little and "controlled" through intimidation, economic and class discrimination during the Jim Crow era. It was a form of "soft" slavery.
