Texas State vs. La Tech ESPNU
Withers running a 3-4 with a very under sized front. Looks like a sieve.

This is giving me nightmares of our D from 2014-2015. So bad fundamentally...no gap control or run fits.

Haha, a 2-win ULL team is going to win this game by 50.

No one cares about a prolific offense if there is no defense and games are being lost.

He is one stubborn SOB. It's pointless to have a scheme when you don't have the personnel to make it work.
Well, he got a game on ESPN, so good for him. This game is gonna get ugly.
But hey, their uniforms don't look so bad.

Truth be known, it's probably the only thing he knows how it's suppose to be run giving him fear of failure to try something different and not wanting to step out of his comfort zone. Whether it works or not, it's all he has confidence in when trying to teach the kids. Remember he's sort of a BS artist but to do so he has to sound like he knows what he's doing. Plus he's too hardheaded to want to hire someone who knows other defenses.

HCMC referenced just have bad JMU's defense was fundamentally when he came on board in multiple interviews the past few weeks. Considering you don't normally get a lot of down talk from HC to HC, it must have been REALLLY bad.

I don't know what gives him such confidence in it given his track record. Hire a DC who knows what the hell he's doing and how to teach it.

That's what I was going to say. There are plenty of coaches that are offensive minded that know absolutely nothing about defense and bring in a guy that makes it work.
The reason EW won't do that is simple: pride. He thinks he knows defense (which he clearly doesn't) and tries to implement something that doesn't work based on the personnel he has.
He could easily bring in a defensive guy that could work with the team and make it a better defense. But EW prides himself in being a defensive guy, so that isn't happening.
Translation: his defenses suck and will always suck until he gains some humility.

True, but made less $. I’m actually puzzled how some of these G5 schools can afford to pay coaches what they do. Doesn’t look like it comes from ticket sales.

Nor is it media rights deals. I don't get it either.

Got bored watching the game and pulled up their budget.
TxSt has approx $31m athletic budget, with 17.7m coming from student fees.
They seem to have allocated around $4m of that to football. Guess they just give a higher percentage of it to the coaches ...
All the gory details are here for anyone that wants to look deeper:

It's funny hearing Houston rail against how terribly coached the defense was and how undisciplined they were when he got here. He just joked on them again this week in his press conference.

What else is there to do on a Thursday night with no other games worth watching. NFL is zzzzzz, Nats blowing another series, may as well joke on the ol' party in the endzone guy.

"Teach it."
My gosh, this is why this jackwagon was gone as soon as he could be gone.
Not meant at you DDD, or anyone at all.
But going from a 3-4, or a 4-3, or even a 4-4 really isn't that hard, a ****-ton of teams do that every game. Every week.
I have NO idea about WTF Withers had or has in mind, but as a former defensive co-ord, he's wholly incompetent. Proves it week after week.
It's amazing. He can recruit, I guess. But honestly what on earth can he coach?
Anyone?!?
