“Our intent is not to be punitive, but to convey the importance of education,” D’Antonio said.

I'd kind of agree with D’Antonio is public education was worth a crap.

Ranking 23rd in the world doesn't get me too excited about education.

If our "education" professionals don't give a rat's patooey about quality education then I don't care to pay any attention to them.

That 23rd ranking is meaningless, an apples and orange comparison. For example, in the UK you are only required to go to school until you are 16. At that point students take a test. If they pass they choose to end their education or move on and continue. So you get almost all the lower ranked students leaving so we end up comparing the scores for all our kids to their top 50, or 30%.

In China you have to pass a test to ove past the junior secondary level. This step eliminates a lot of the dead weight and allows the teachers to focus on making the smartest, most highly motivated, students smarter. We then compare the scores of all our kids against these cream of the crop kids.

I'm not saying we don't have issues with our education system, but most of it has to do with our "compassion" in trying to give every kid an equal opportunity. A lot of other industrialized nations don't do that.

Parents are on situations where they are single and work inflexible hours. If their teenage kid is leaving for school and making a turn in the back alley instead of going to the bus stop, throwing the parent in jail is not solving anything. The kid needs to go to jail... and grow up.

Oh, and Germany has 5 different types of high schools. We compare our scores only to those from the kids going to what is essentially college prep HS in Germany. It would be equal if we basically only used the scores of our honors program type students. If we did that we would compare quite favorably.
