This would be the most logical approach; I doubt it happens. Childers will start and Santa will see limited if any time. Carey much prefers the conservative approach. With our MAC schedule, and the way the defense is playing, he will likely be rewarded. If we win, this will be the line up for the rest of the season. Carey will be far more patient with Childers than he was with Santa. Beebe being back will be a huge plus; Santa had only 2 quarters with Beebe; Childers will greatly benefit from our best receiver being back in the lineup.

Agreed. Santa will start and Childers will get some series. Seems like the series with Childers may have replaced the wildcat with Mister package.

As I have said, I am OK with either Santa or Childers starting and getting most of the playing time.

I still like the idea of Santa running the whole offense, including the read option and designed QB running. Santa has the best deep ball, and with the defense having to play Huff and Santa running that should loosen up the passing lanes for Santa with the deep and medium routes. I think this makes the O the best for scoring more points than any other option and has the potential to limit picks. Childers would then get some series, sort of like Lynch in Harnish’s senior year.

Childers starting and getting most of the playing time makes sense in terms of a heavy run O and keeping Buffalo’s O off the field. So long as a Childers run O moves the chains and scores enough points, that keeps our D fresh and we look very good with our D holding Buffalo down. If Carey goes with Childers and we win, I think you are right; Childers will be the starter, as that plays into Carey’s conservative approach of letting the D carry us while the O scores enough and limits mistakes.

I’m not sure Carey will be more patient with Childers; he continually emphasizes limiting mistakes from the QB position, and he made the point of noting he discussed turnovers with Childers after the Kent State game, and he had plenty to say to Childers when he came off the field after his pick.

Solid post; it will be interesting. If it is Santa, Childers needs to be ready, because he will be likely to be used situationally, or if Santa struggles. If it is Childers, that is a major statement to Santa. At that point Carey is saying to Santa, I seen the good and the not so good, and I am going with the guy who gives me the best chance to win...and it's not you.

By the same token, if Childers starts Santa has to be ready also, in the event Childers is ineffective or makes mistakes. I know it can be tough on these young men when they work so hard, and let's face it, most of our players were the super stars on their high school and prior teams, and not starting can be a big hit on their egos. I hope Santa does it take it as a final statement/decision by Carey if he starts Childers. My read is that Carey is going back and forth between Santa and Childers (as well as Graham being in the mix), and due to injury or other reasons Santa may be starting or playing a lot in the future.

RE: Who is the Huskies' Starting Quarterback this Week?
I don't think there is any doubt Childers is the starter; the press conference is all you need to hear.
Carey two comments provide the answer:
1) Childers was good; Santa was bad (that was all he had to say about Santa)
2) The golf analogy..."I don't care about your great shots; talk to me about your bad shots".
I think a change from Santa to Childers is not a situational change but a philosophical change. Childers (and Graham) matches Carey's scheme and approach more than Santa. If Graham doesn't get hurt we would have never seen Santa or Childers; BTW, we would be 2-3, with wins against EIU and KSU, and we would be performing to preseason expectations. Because he is in Carey's comfort zone I also think Childers will be given a long leash. My guess is the KSU game started a new QB era at NIU.

Do the double QB one more time with Santa passing to Childers, or vice versa.

Gotta do what the D does not expect.

Am very impressed with our depth in the QB position this year given the unfortunate previous years of injury. I hope all these QB improve and remain injury free.

Graham would have been yanked even if not injured. He is just not a good QB. Next year I hope Carey takes the QB position seriously in the summer camp. We just can't have these extended position competitions be delayed until the season anymore

RE: Who is the Huskies' Starting Quarterback this Week?
In the last two games we have played against really good defenses which exposed the inexperience of our QBs.
They should look better this week.
Our really good defense enjoys Pick 6 opportunities so this week should be fun to watch.
