Attendance and the FBS
I was looking through the game notes for the Buffalo game and took note of the attendance figures from our first three home games. The BC and EIU games show attendance at about 16k while the rain-soaked homecoming game came in at about 11k. The actual average is a little below 15k. We do not have any weekend home games remaining on the schedule so I do not see any way we are going to average 15k in attendance this year. I also assume that we did not average 15k last year either. My understanding is that FBS members need to average 15k in home football (paid or actual) attendance on a rolling two-year basis. I know some schools buy their own tickets or have sponsors purchase tickets in bulk in exchange for advertising opportunities. Just wondering if anyone has any intel on whether NIU is in danger of being kicked out of the FBS, or are we playing games with the "paid" attendance? I know much of the teams in the MAC are are in a similar position. Thoughts??????

There is a lot to discuss here, for sure, but I think we all can agree unequivocally that NIU will not be kicked out of FBS for attendance reasons.

Attendance will suck as long as the MACtion continues. It’s just a fact of life.

If/when attendance becomes an issue for retaining FBS status, I would certainly hope that the MAC stands up for its teams since it's the MAC's fault that attendance has plummeted.

Down the line, I can see NIU saying Nebraska is a "home game" although we will get no concessions and pay us to play them so we can count the attendance toward our total.

I wish I shared your confidence. NIU's best hope for meeting this requirement is to play an early season Saturday game against a strategically chosen opponent at Soldier Field.

Playing late in the season on a cold weekday night against a MAC opponent at whatever they are calling White Sox Park these days will not work.

If NCAA decides to enforce the rule the MAC might not be able to save us from ourselves.

Agree. Soldier Field games must be the future.
NIU is Chicago's team. Most alumni are in the Chicago area.

Disagree about cold weekday MAC games in Chicago during exam time at NIU.

Attendance at FB stadiums is an outdated indicator.
The future is revenue generated from NIU fans who tune in via radio, TV and increasingly internet.
A MAC sports channel should be considered.
I love NIU sports, but like most NIU Alumni dislike going to DeKalb.

Would rather spend money to watch NIU FB from home then travel, park and travel.

The future is engaging your fan base. The MAC does not generate a lot of TV revenue. Having your fans sit at home and watching the few games on TV and even more games on computer does not generate ticket revenue or donations. It would be interesting to see how much NIU lost in season ticket sales and donations with this year's schedule. I know they will lose me next year if this fiasco is continued.

Agree that the future is engaging your fan base.
Most fans are not going to travel to DeKalb.
Most fans of most schools watch on TV, internet etc.
Paying Money to access NIU FB games through an NIU TV channel would generate revenue.
I would pay for access to NIU FB games.
Having an interactive Device that allows fan feedback would be the next step.
