There are no active players on that list. Carlos Beltran joined the list last year before his retirement -- he hit his 200th and final home run as an AL player on August 16th.

I was surprised when I looked it up to see that Pujols has not yet hit 200 HR for the Angels. He might not make it in 2018 (he needs 31 to reach 200 with the Angels) if Ohtani gets a lot of the Angels' DH plate appearances.

Those of us who are getting older will remember when Frank Robinson was the only player on the 200-200 list.

and mvp's

That's right, Frank Robinson is still the only player to win MVP in both leagues.

i'll never forget that. i let my father down for not knowing that when i was 16. one of the few friends i've ever known my father to have posed that question to me to see how much i knew about baseball. i cannot recall my answer. i hope i was at least close

Makes you wonder with the Nats if they have a really good shot to keep Harper now.

And Otani to the Padres. Double ****.

Dodgers weren't the most likely choice to get either, but close enough to hope. Sounds like LA wanted Marlins to take at least one and probably 2 of Gonzalez, Kashmir and McCarthy. So yes, payroll is indeed a consideration. Thing is, I know they're gonna make a run at Harper and it seems pretty likely that he'll command more than Stanton.

Now THAT'S a Hot Stove transaction. After missing out on Stanton and Otani, i was wondering if the Dodgers were gonna by to be able to pull anything off with their payroll concerns. I should have known better with this front office. All of their payroll dead weight gone in one trade: Gonzalez, Kazmir, McCarthy (along with Charlie Culbertson), taking back only Matt Kemp. No players that would have been regulars. Dodgers now are so far under the Luxury Tax threshold for 2018 they can go after a free agent. But more importantly they've reset the tax so that if (when???) they go back over the threshold buying free agents next year, they'll be back to the 20% penalty. So it's definitely a move for next year and down the road but at the same time they haven't done anything to harm their chances for this coming year.

Hey swoosh! Nothing about Arroyo et al for Longoria? Seems like, in terms of player value (current and future), it's close to neutral unless Arroyo turns out to be a superstar. More importantly, it frees up the Giants front office vis a vis luxury cap and ability to chase more players. Kind of rotten for Rays fans but if Arroyo excels they'll forget about it. Of course, that'll probably piss Giants fans off.

So Giants get McCutchen after getting Longoria earlier this off season.

Swoosh, your thoughts?

**** the Pirates. If I'm any big market team, I'd instantly want to get rid of revenue sharing. The Pirates are pocketing $50M as opposed to investing in players. Nutting is literally stealing from the Yankees.

The second I saw your name on this post, I knew what the post was going to be.

Just sucks right now. All the big market teams starting to dominate again. And it still blows my mind when you have idiot teams like Atlanta flipping HELPING LA get under the tax threshold so they can reset their tax penalties.

The beginning of the end for the Pirates run was when they traded Walker to the Mets. I personally don't care if the big market teams dominate again. F*ck a salary cap, f*ck a luxury tax/revenue sharing, what MLB needs is the soccer Pro/Rel system. Per Forbes, the Pirates are worth 1.25B, with a market size that's relative to St. Louis. There's zero reason why the Pirates cannot have a similar payroll, on a yearly basis that's akin to the Cardinals.

Only thing with the trade was he was going to be a free agent after next year anyways. They get a guy in return who could be the Pirates long term answer in cf, and a pretty good relief pitcher. Pretty good haul for a 1 year rental. If guys aren't going to resign, you have to get something back in return.

Nah.... Cutch would've signed. The Pirates never attempted to make an offer. His wife is from Pittsburgh and they named their child Steel.

And he is 31 right now, and will be 32 by end of next year. Better to get rid of a guy like that a smidge too early than it is to keep him too long and get stuck with a bad contract.

The Braves are owned by a media conglomerate. While that is the source of many of my frustrations with them, I'd be willing to bet there was some quid pro quo with that LA tax deal.

Liberty Media does not care in the least whether the Braves are actually competitive. As long as the Braves are making money, that's all they care about.

Curious to know what you mean by this. I mean, it was a trade...

I'm not saying I know anything that went on behind closed doors. I'm just saying the Liberty Media group are not primarily running a baseball operation. The vast majority of the moves the Braves have made the last few years were about cost-cutting and not necessarily improving the on-field product.

Somewhere along the line, some other consideration could have been made...maybe some favor exchanged that would have encouraged Liberty Media to help out the LA owners.

I could be wrong. I'm just sayin'

Would be interesting to know what the annual cash flow is. I'd be very surprised if the Pirates have as much annual revenue as the Cardinals.

one thing- while yes the actual market is similar between Pittsburgh and St Louis(St Louis 21, Pittsburgh 24)- the surrounding area is a whole hell of a lot different in favor of St Louis.

I see that ARod will be coming over to ESPN to call Sunday Night Baseball games along with holdover Jessica Mendoza and new play by play man Matt Vasgersian. Arod will continue to work the postseason with Fox. Nice move and should be a really good booth I would think.
