The key now is to use our relative early success (both on the field and in the stands) and try to convert the curious/casual fan (currently about 12,000 in my estimation) in to that "core" fanbase group. It won't happen overnight, but I think that a "core" fanbase of 25,000-30,000 will not only make us very competitive for any future conference realignments, but also gives us a platform from which to push for an oncampus stadium (if the BJCC stadium doesn't progress in the meantime).
My son is a true UAB fan because he was born into the fold. Both his parents are UAB graduates so attending all the UAB functions in his early childhood shaped his view. Sadly he chose another university to pursue his athletic endeavors on the collegiate level due to UAB's limited athletics but he was home for homecoming this past weekend. So give it time new generations of UAB fans are in the making04-rock

From the standpoint of former UAB football players, our oldest former players are mostly still in their mid to upper 40s. They are just now reaching an age where they have a decent income to contribute toward the program. Plus, their kids are just now reaching college age. Of course, many of those kids will not go to UAB, but many will. But even those that don't will still support UAB as a secondary or even primary major college football team. We are reaching a point where we can grow very quickly, but it depends largely on capitalizing upon this momentum. I think we will because our alumni base and its base of wealth is growing faster than ever now.

Buckle up! Here we go!

UAB would be in the upper half of the AAC in attendance. The AAC has some teams that do pretty well year in and year out, but they need to increase attendance by 20K across the board before they can be serious contenders with the P5 conferences in attendance. ECU use to average about 50K, but they are having a bad year. Even with Virginia Tech playing there for a game, they are still down about 10K. Not sure how these numbers compare with the MWC, Sunbelt and MAC.

ECU 39,609 (3 games)
Houston 37,642 (2 games)
UCF 36,043 (2 games)
Cincinnati 33,284 (2 games)
Memphis 32,713 (3 games)
Navy 31,777 (2 games)
South Fla. 28,730 (3 games)
Temple 27,351 (3 games)
SMU 21,506 (4 games)
UConn 19,236 (2 games)
Tulsa 19,046 (3 games)
Tulane 16,292 (2 games)

UAB 32,405 (3 games)
Louisiana Tech 24,705 (3 games)
UTSA 24,305 (2 games)
Marshall 23,254 (2 games)
Southern Miss 23,002 (3 games)
UTEP 20,562 (3 games)
Rice 20,349 (2 games)
Old Dominion 20,118 (3 games)
North Texas 19,867 (2 games)
Middle Tennessee 19,589 (3 games)
Florida Atlantic 19,379 (3 games)
Western Kentucky 17,476 (3 games)
FIU 15,348 (1 game)
Charlotte 13,421 (3 games)

Memphis' first game was played in the remnants of a tropical storm featuring sideways rain and tornado sirens, so that throws off the numbers.

UL-Monroe: 10,263
UCLA: 46,291
Southern Illinois: 41,584

we play #25 Navy this weekend and that game should draw somewhere between the SIU crowd and the UCLA crowd if weather holds.

No, it doesn't "throw off the numbers". It is a reason the numbers are not higher, and every school has them, but those are the actual numbers.

uh, who said they weren't 'actual'? moreover, there's a difference between rain (which every team has to deal with) and a tropical depression.

Oh god, next they'll start explaining how they didn't really cheat to go to the Final Four. Please make it stop.

We can play too. Our crowd was greatly affected by the hurricane Nate approaching. We sat in LF and watched the outer bands go over. I don't see our fans whining about it.

To be more specific, our game was played during a tropical storm warning.
